Truck Thursday: 1975 Volvo C304 6×6
There’s rare– Unimogs and Pinzgauers. And then there’s rarer– the Volvo C303 4×4. And then there’s the rarest– this magnificent Volvo C304 6×6!
Alex at Red Label Automotive is refurbishing this rig for a client-friend. Fairly recently, it was living a semi-abandoned existence in San Francisco as a dilapidated and ad hoc shelter for some unfortunate souls. As you can see, Red Label’s transformation is coming along nicely. Aside from the windshield wipers, the exterior work appears to be almost complete. The engine and interior are still works in progress.
The 4×4 and 6×6 share the B30 powerplant (3-liter inline six) found in the 164 passenger car. By the time this project is done, it will look, feel, and drive better than new. How can something be so ugly, and yet so beautiful?

Unusual! I think I need one for Boston winter driving!
Supposed to snow tonight too!
Sure, it's boxy. But it could be boxier. I want to see a Volvo that really pushes the boxiness envelope. A boxier engine would be cool too, even if Volvo has a tradition of I6s.
Nailed it.

C202! Which, incidentally, I'd prefer for its city-friendly size.
OMG it's so CUTE!

I bet this is the same vehicle, as it looked before the restoration. Also a 1975 C 304 that I photographed it in San Francisco, semi-abandoned, under a freeway, in 2008:

Either way, the old paint is way cooler.
That's gotta be it. Alex said he did lop the top off. How many 6x6s can there be in the City?
Is Alex going to use carbs or jetronic?
Why would you lop anything off of that?
Agreed. Given the rarity that level of modification seems unjustifiable. Still, better to get the machine in working order without destroying its soul as many other potential modifications could have done, i.e. lifting or swapping a different motor. Somehow I wouldn't mind this baby getting the suspension shortened and slammed to the pavement just for the ridiculousness that would be. Also dreamcycle metal flake paint.
I dream of Volvo military vehicles. I dream most often of this one.
Want.
Ditto.
Anybody got a towel I can borrow?
Quite nice.
However, wipers, with a windscreen pretty much vertical, aren't necessary if you use Rejex.
Puts Rain-X to shame.
Reminds me, I should buy another bottle. The first one lasted about 7 years.
Ah yes, Rejex, most of my former girlfriends delegated this olelongrooffan to the pile that possessed that name, often long before they got the 7 year itch.
Sarah Jessica Parker is/was thought to be attractive. I'd rather date the truck.
This is seriously cool
When you absolutely, positively need to have the biggest, baddest, most zombie-crushingest vehicle on the road.
It's got a block with no head, and the most massivist tow bar hanging off the back end I've ever seen. Sumpin' doesn't add up…
There´s tons of these here in Sweden ! They´ve all been decomissioned by the military and are lying around axle-less ,since the portalaxles are used by other hoonigans….
The funny thing about this one is the guy who owns it lives in Sonoma California and is a rich prick. This thing will never see the offroad, he uses it to impress people around Sonoma.
I thought he was going to use it to give tours of his vineyard
