Hooniverse Wagon Wednesday – A Timecapsule 1962 Chevrolet BelAir Wagon
Welcome to another Hooniverse Wagon Wednesday. This will be the last time I will draw from the well that is Kevco Classic Car Sales in Sioux Falls, but it is a great car to celebrate Wagon Wednesday with. This is a 1962 Chevrolet BelAir Wagon, and it is about as stripped as anything out there. Check it out and see if you think this is a truly desirable wagon.
In 1962, Chevrolet had three different trim packages for the Wagon, the base Biscayne, the mid-level Bel-Air, and the top of the line Impala. This Bel-Air was suppose to be the mid-level spec, but in the 60′s everything was optional and it shows. According to the dealer:
1962 CHEVY BELAIR 4 DR. WAGON IN “SILVER BLUE” POLY / ORIG. BLUE FABRIC INT. ALL CHROME AND STAINLESS IS AS NEW. ALL GLASS IN ALSO EXCELLENT CONDITION. IT HAS ACTUAL 22,543 ORIGINAL MILES AND IS INDEED A TRUE “TIME CAPSULE” SURVIVOR. EQUIPPED WITH THE “TURBO FIRE” 283 C.I. V-8 / 195 H.P. / POWERGLIDE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. NEWER BLACKWALL RADIAL TIRES AND STOCK WHEELS AND HUBCAPS, NEWER EXHAUST. TRULY AN “AMAZING” QUALITY VEHICLE ALWAYS IN A CLIMATED CONTROL GARAGED WHEN NOT BEING “FAIR WEATHER” DRIVEN. THIS CAR RUNS AND DRIVES AS NICE AS IT IS. TOP TO BOTTOM EXCEPTIONAL, COLLECTOR QUALITY VEHICLE.
My question is this, why on earth would someone try and preserve what is really a basic Chevy Wagon with no options beside the V-8 and the Powerglide? This is reallya truly exceptional wagon, and the price reflects this at $21,800. See the dealer listing, along with the multitude of photos, and tell me if this should be the Hooniverse Staff Car.

It's OK, but there have been other Wagon Wednesday cars I've seen here that are more appealing to me, many of which were less than half the price of this one.
If it was a 409 4 speed, maybe, but a 283, glide nawwww.
What's with the heater hose setup? I see the two hoses coming off the engine, going to the firewall, but I also see what looks like a piece of hose looped at the firewall. And yeah, I can just hear that Powerglide whining, as the throttle is blipped in Park.
Yeah, too bad about the Powerglide. If it had three-on-the-tree, I'd like it much more. Still, it's a nice old wagon in a remarkable state of preservation. I don't know if it's twenty grand nice, but still, there can't be many around that are this clean and unmolested. I wouldn't mind having it one bit.
I like power glides when hooked to a 283. My first car had that set up. Down shift at about 45 and get on it and go for the pass. Perfect for a 65 mph 2 lane blacktop.
I am also liking the slick rackless roof. It will fit fine in the interior what ever it is you think you need to put on the roof.
I have no need for a Chevy station wagon, but the color is really lovely.
It's very nice, however I see a car like this as a blank slate for a project. And being a survivor, it kind of prevents that motivation. A car can be restored 100 times, but it can only be preserved once. I'd rather has some miles so I don't feel bad when I chuck the engine for a big crate motor. I'm sure this gal will find a good home.
Id Buy this car then start to cut and grind my way into a slick LSX 6 speed swap. Yum!
Turn that '62 into a '64, make it white with a beige interior, and you've got my first car. They want $21,800 for it? They are out of their f&&king minds. Try $500.
I feel like all these dealers are screaming at me. Literally. I'M SURE I UNDERSTAND CAPS LOCK, BUT THIS DEAL IS TOO GOOD TO PASS UP. IT HAS "PAINT" AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN "OUTSIDE!" I AM NOT TRYING TO "SCAM" YOU, BUT I WILL GIVEN THE "CHANCE." I ONCE SOLD MY MOM A PAIR OF "USED" MEN'S BRIEFS. EXCELLENT DEAL, THEY HAD ONLY BEEN WORN "OCCASIONALLY" AND "INDOORS" THE BRIEFS WERE A "SURVIVOR" FOR SURE!
Also, fair weather to me means the sun is out. Could be any temp and have just rained or snowed. Wagon looks nice though, but it's TARP nice. As in I'd buy it if the government gave the money and then keep it outside under a tarp if I remembered to.
Was carpeting standard on the Bel Air? Maybe the heater or the side mirror? That's about all I can think of. This thing doesn't even have a glove box.
My grandparents drove a similar Biscayne wagon until 1973-ish. 230 ci 6, Powerglide and rubber mats. My grandfather used to give my dad a hard time because the beater '65 Impala sport coupe he bought as his first car was still nicer than the family car.
Yes it does have a glove box. It's located in the lower central portion of the dash over the transmission hump.

Wagons are sexy. All wagon owners are awesome. Especially early Chevrolet wagon owners.
While this is nice, $21,800 for a bare-bones '62 Chevy is a lot of green. There are lots of other 1960s wagons I'd choose before this.
needs moar horsepower and moar manual gearbox to qualify for the Hooniverse Staff Wagon (HSW). Since it's really not that remarkable, let's swap in an LS9 and a manual gearbox and we can talk.
call me suspicious but why was motor painted why no pics of undercarriage chevy didnt have a195hp 283 in 62 was 170hp this car was in arizona classics a few yrs back for 16k couldnt sell it then looks like a bogus car in previous pics speedo numbers didnt line up good luck expect a surprise
seen undercarriage and it aint pretty they did try to dress it up a little but got undercoating every place it should not be
