2012 Anti-Football Run

Jim Yu January 6, 2012 Car Shows, Hooniverse Goes To..., Nostalgia 26 Comments
Every January 1, classic car enthusiasts from all over the San Francisco Bay Area get together in Sausalito and go for a spirited drive through the hills of Marin and Sonoma Counties. Here are just a few of the cars at 2012’s Run. Be careful, picture intensive, may cause uncontrollable drooling.
At the starting point in Sausalito, people parked randomly. And yet, there was order to the chaos.
This very red RHD Mercedes 200T was featured in Bring A Trailer.
ISO and CRX.
For the Run, I got a ride in my friend Rich’s 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6. It has a 3 liter V6 from the Milano.

Orange Lamborghini Islero and orange Volvo 142.
Triple parked.
Tatras are always crowd pleasers.
On the way to Stinson Beach. For you Sharon Stone fans, the Lotus chase in Basic Instinct was filmed on this road.

What’s that in the rear view mirror?

It’s a Talbot!
The proud owner of this Bentley Turbo RL showed off the immaculate engine bay.
Double parked in front of the Petaluma Creamery.
The end. After getting dropped off back in Sausalito, this BMW Neue Klasse was parked next to my Popemobile.

I drooled at the MR2 and CR-X… but only because they are from my childhood.

The MG with the bed in the back is gorgeous, though. I want one.

    • I like how he executed the tailgate. I'm imagining hinges hidden behind the overriders.

      • Is it too much to hope that the rear plate is hiding a receiver hitch?

  • Scandinavian Flick

That looks like an awesome event. I love living here for a list of reasons, and these pictures show 2 of the highest on that list. I actually recognize a few of those cars. I'll have to remember this event next year. Maybe I'll have The Brick running and looking good by then so I can fit in a little better. Or I'll just bum a ride from one of my vintage-owning friends.

Guaranteed no dirty looks at a Volvo at a Seconds Saturday event in Oaktown 😉

      • Scandinavian Flick

Hopefully I won't get any for the GTO either, since I am not holding out much hope of getting it running by April… :-/

        • vwminispeedster

Goats are welcome to graze as well.

  • AZRallyChick

Definitely a Bucket List event for me! I have heard only great things about the event – nice people, eclectic group of cars (as the photos above show!!!!) and the scenery/roads are awesome.

  • vwminispeedster

Note to Hooniverse: Can we be made aware of events like these BEFORE they happen? I would have loved to take PLUSH or the tow truck out and hang with other like-mined enthusiasts. Or threaten to tow them away. 🙂

Just found out that its from the California Mille folks and that they are starting their own Cars and Coffee event in fancy pants Sausalito. I might need to go to the February event and try to recruit some folks for the March Seconds Saturdays event.

    • Was news to us, too.

North Bay = too far. Might as well be Mars, as far as I'm concerned.

Depending on how this year goes, I'd love to work on putting together more frequent, informal (free), NorCal driving events.

That, or scheming to get back into LeMons without it resulting in me living in a van down by the river.

      • It happens every New Years Day. It sprinkled a few years ago and the turnout was still significant.

        • vwminispeedster

Committing it to memory for events to attend NOW.

      • vwminispeedster

        Ok. I forgive you.

I feel uncomfortable when I drive through Marin when the idea of a crappy car is a 4 year Lexus RX. I'm more comfortable in East Oakland.

In the back of my head I was thinking of adding a drive after some of the SS events (when more favorable weather presents itself) or something totally independent of those days. I want to get back out on Mines Road and Mount Hamilton.

I know a certain award winning MGB that might need support (mental, physical, emotional, etc)

  • Vavon

I love cars of the 80s and I'm glad to see such a nice looking CRX!
I can't remember the last time I saw one that didn't look tatty or even worse, completely molested… Great!
I bet you Tonyola liked that too 😉 <img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/galleries/2010/autos/1006/gallery.top_mpg_since_1984/images/2_1986_honda_civic_crx_hf2.jpg"> And by the way, Jim Yu took some great pictures!

  • Syrax

I'm not the only one thinking "there's something wrong with that Sebring" every time I see a Flavia, am I?

    • Van_Sarockin

You should get your Flavia Flav adjusted.

  • Van_Sarockin

Wonderfully eclectic group for a jaunt. I'm so jealous you can just set off on a local ride like that from SF.

  • A few more sets of photos from the run, courtesy of various members of The Arcane Auto Society:

  • smokyburnout

I saw "200T" and wondered how a W123 with less displacement and more weight would even make it up the hill in the first pic… Then, I click the link and see it's a gasser with the fivespeed manual! So jealous.

    • My thoughts exactly at first. That red paint is really eye-catching in person.

  • salguod

That's an impressively diverse group. Jags, Alfas and Porsches mixing it up with a CRX and some classic American iron. Did I see a brown '57 Eldorado convertible in there?

  • Mad_Hungarian

Does nobody out there own a Corvair? Am I going to have to ship mine (and me) out there to fix that?

    • jeepjeff

I know there are Corvairs in the Bay Area. Well, at least one, and it runs: http://g.co/maps/rjkc9

I've seen it driving about (I pass by it on my way to the BART station every time I head into the office).

      • Mad_Hungarian

Umm, err, if you mean the red car with the black roof . . . that's a Valiant. Sorry.

  • Dilbert Smilbert

That's just jaw-dropping. Around here you just get muscle-cars, or you get fart-can Hondas. Amazing diversity and I like how nobody seemed to worry what they parked next to.

  • Armand4

I knew I'd regret bailing on it again this year…
