Announcing the 2011 Hooniversal Car of the Year

Deartháir January 4, 2012 Hooniversal Car of the Year 85 Comments

The Prestigious Hooniversal Car of the Year Award!

As you all know, I nominated the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale for this year’s Car of the Year award. I felt it was a thoroughly worthwhile candidate, and I stand by that nomination. But my nomination also packs with it a little bit of shame. I’m ashamed that I overlooked a candidate, and one so obvious and perfect that when it was suggested behind the scenes in discussions amongst the editors, it caused me to facepalm with significant enthusiasm. I couldn’t believe that I had been so hypnotized by that curvy redhead’s beauty that I had forgotten the girl creature we’ve all loved all along.

I never would have thought I could have been so proud and happy to have my candidate lose; but it’s proof to me that the commenters here at Hooniverse really do come together to create the greatest group of automotive enthusiasts on these fine Internets. You could not be swayed by the awesomeness of a Challenger, or the sex appeal of an Alfa. You couldn’t even be distracted by the almost-as-awesome-but-wasn’t-shiny-side-down TTTO Corvair. You read our nominations, you mulled it over, and you chose one hell of a worthy victor. Our congratulations to our very own Sparky, and the Killer ZomBee, our 2012 Hooniversal Car of the Year!

The ZomBee and the DysenTrailer

I think we all need to stop for just a moment, now, and reflect on just how fucking awesome that really is. Every other publication out there has a Car of the Year award, and it pretty much always goes to something rather… boring. It’s something new, it’s something fresh, something… bland… and, more importantly, it’s something that brings with it a rather massive advertising budget. Here at Hooniverse, we just chose a British roadster that’s closing in on 40 years old. It’s beat to hell, it’s been through a dozen races, and it drove to one race towing a one-wheeled covered wagon with “YOU HAVE DIED OF DYSENTERY” written on the back.

That is not only the essence of Hooniverse, but that is as close as I can come to a concrete, tangible explanation of why I love this site. Congratulations to the ‘Bee, and my heartfelt thanks to our entire community for making our little corner of the internet so awesome.

  • jeepjeff

I just want to state for the record, that I, too, am glad that the Killer Zombee won, even though I didn't vote for it. It is definitely the best car of the lot (even next to the Challenger and the Stradale…).

    Congratulations, Pete!

    (Nice valve cover, too.)

  • vwminispeedster

Yeah Pete!! Now when does super Spouse get her engine back? 😉

  • WOOO Congrats Pete!

  • dukeisduke

    Congratulations Pete!

  • B72

I was was going to post something else when I noticed that my iPhone had autocorrected the capitalization of "ZomBee". Even Apple recognizes the greatness of the ZomBee !

  • $kaycog

Congratulations, Mr. Killer Zombee…..my choice! I would like to award you a little something.

    • joshuman

That paint color is fetching. Must be time to peruse http://browncar.tumblr.com/ again.

    • OA5599

      Nice headlights, indeed.

    • mr. mzs zsm msz esq

She seems to have won a prize as well, good for her! She should be careful touching both rings like that though, liable to be a be an intermittent bad ground. Oh no wait, she has to apply the pressure just right so the headlights work, got it.

    • Oh my… (slams laptop shut, then opens v.e.r.y. slowly…)

Ok, NOW my world is complete! Got me my very own $kaycog Prize!!! WOOT-WOOT!!

      *Thanks Skaycog!!* <Blink-blink, hug>

(resisting the urge to write "Also, did you know my first MGB was the same year and originally the same color? The recessed grill was only made 2 years blah blah blah blah blah, yadda-yadda-yadda……." /complete car dork)

      • Scandinavian Flick

"Ok, NOW my world is complete! Got me my very own $kaycog Prize!!!"

        You never forget your first.

        • Irishzombieman

Mine was a Ferrari Modena, the view of which was blocked by a lady dressed in flowers.

    • Also… <right-click, save>

      • $kaycog

Your first MGB was the same year and originally the same color as my award to you! That's awesome!

  • Irishzombieman

    Yeah! Yeah yeah yeaaaaaaah!
But mere congratulations are not good enough for such a momentous event as this, so I give you this totally bitchin’ Dodge van. Watch out, though. Women’ll want to play chess with you every single time you stop.

    <img src="http://albumofawesomeness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Chess-Van.jpg" width="500/">

    • mr. mzs zsm msz esq

Ah my favorite sort of chess! Wait if she is winning strip chess, why is she wearing so little? Oh wait, that's a very well chosen angle, thanks Irishman.

All hail the ZomBee and congrats Sparky and team!

    • It's "Brownie the World's Greatest Crappy Old RV's" hot little sister!! This might just be the paint scheme I was looking for…

Also, the world needs more sidepipes. And yellow. And chess-playing bikini-babes.

    • topdeadcentre

      Check–MATE!

  • Congratulations… well deserved!

Also, makes the LeMons bug attack my brain all over again.

    Hooniverse needs a new entry…

  • Excellent! ZomBee FTW!

  • Deartháir

For our friends from Wykop.pl and other sites who are accusing us of cheating…

I warned everyone, including you and your group, several times about using botnets and IP randomizers to try and ramp up the votes. You did not listen, and so I removed your votes. I did this for ALL the entries, but the group voting for the Polonez were the ones cheating most blatantly. I opted not to disqualify it altogether, and in fact didn't even remove all the questionable votes — only the ones that showed up as a string of 25 votes from almost-identical IP's and domains within the space of a few minutes.

I'm sorry that your chosen car didn't win, but you can blame some unsavoury characters within your group for wrecking it for everyone.

As for the giant spam-attack we got last night of people showing support for the Polonez… voting closed at midnight Pacific time, which is when I tallied the results and wrote the winner's post. Anything that happens after that… is just too late. That's not cheating, that's following the rules that I set out.

Complaints may be sent to myself, my email address is available up top under the About –> Masthead menu. Also, I do not speak Polish, so complaints must be sent in English.

    • 3600 votes? Seems legit to me

      • Scandinavian Flick

What? It's only 606% of the total. As a deceased Nigerian Prince, I find that totally legit.

    • The Polish mad at the Canadian? Man, for once us Germans aren't to blame.

      • Deartháir

They can get as mad as they want. The poll closed automatically at midnight local time, so all their votes were 3 or 4 or 5 hours too late. Which is how they got the 650% results.

And I'm Irish, there's always someone mad at us.

        • The Professor

          Yes, normally it's the Irish.

          • craigsu

Reminds me of that old British joke:

First there were the Scots, who kept the Sabbath and everything else they could lay their hands on.
Then there were the Welsh, who prayed on their knees and their neighbours.
Thirdly, there were the Irish, who never knew what they wanted, but were willing to fight for it anyway.
Lastly, there were the English, who considered themselves a self-made nation, thus relieving the Almighty of a dreadful responsibility.

            • The Professor

IntenseDebate has been on the fritz, and I just got the email for your comment, so excuse my lateness in responding.
Excellent joke, I'll have to remember that one.

    • The Professor

Complain? Yes, I'll complain! There was a complete lack of cookies and donuts at the last staff <del>beating</del> meeting! And what is this "Tim Horton" stuff? Was that supposed to be coffee?

      • Deartháir

Tim Horton's serves a substance that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike coffee.

        • Devin

Do they put drugs in it? Because that's the only reason I can think of for lines to go all the way around the block.

I don't drink their coffee though, but then I don't drink coffee in general so I won't judge that.

    • BlackIce_GTS

      I know what this means.
I have 11 months to find and nominate an FSO drift truck.

    • Wait, I thought Canadian was the language of the world?

  • Scandinavian Flick

Damn, I wrote in my vote for the 2012 328i. Car and Driver compelled me to obey…

    Congrats, Pete! Very well deserved!

  • OA5599

I wanted the ZomBee to take a well-deserved win, and it did. However, I also didn't want my personal nomination, the Viper-powered PT Cruiser-amino to be so solidly in last place, and by such a wide margin (As of this writing, 0% of the votes cast, vs. the Bee's 22% and the Polish Mafia's 606%).

I attempted to kill the curve by posting on a PT forum asking for votes. Unfortunately, my message got auto-moderated, and a response saying first posts are treated like spam if they have more than one link (including pictures), and inviting me to post an introduction in the new members area indicating my intention to stick around. Not worth it.

So enjoy the rewards of victory, Sparky. I'll be over here sulking with whatever comes with a last-place finish.

    • Deartháir

You get a hug. C'mere, big guy!

    • coupeZ600

It wasn't until I started hanging out here that I didn't always end up voting for the last-place finisher in everything. It just shows what a great bunch we are that now I wish I could change my vote from the winner to the Viper/PT so I could join you where I feel most comfortable, an outcast amongst the misfits. Instead you just get another big hug, tinged with just the very slightest hint of jealousy.

      And Congrats, Pete!

  • JayP2112

This may be the first award an MGB has won since it's intro in 1962 outside of a British car show.
    Excellent work!

    • sport_wagon

      Comment of the year.

  • Congrats, Pete! Very well earned.

  • Henry Approved!

  • TurboBrick

Congratulations Pete! I knew Zombee had winner written all over it, so I tactically voted for the FSO Polonez (just once) – Which has now created quite a buzz due to the overwhelming number of votes it received in the prestigious Hooniversal Car of The Year awards, where it was nominated by respected automotive journalists. FSO ends the year as the auto-industry brand with the most growth in positive brand equity, and hopes continue to do so in 2012.

  • The Professor

Hwaa? Vote? Pete won? Good show, well done!

  • Congratulations Pete!

Or as they say in Polish, Gratulacje możesz głosować kradzież oleju palenia lucas przecieka do góry nogami wzorem cnót Ciebie!

    Way to go Killer ZomBee!

    • Scandinavian Flick

"Congratulations, you can vote stealing lucas oil leaks smoking upside-down model of the virtues you"?

That raises an important question: Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

      • Deartháir

I had to read that a few times to make sure I wasn't having a stroke.

        • Scandinavian Flick
        • Irishzombieman

It's late, and I'm really sleepy, and I betcha I read it 10 times before realizing that 1–I read it as it was printed, and 2–it was a joke of some sort that I didn't get.

Then I laughed quite a lot. Wouldn't've been nearly as funny wide awake.

      • I find it highly amusing that when you input the output of Google translate back through it, the result is in fact not what you put in. But humorously close.

  • Devin

I voted ZomBee because by no means should that car still function, I mean just being built by British Leyland alone is enough of an obstacle.

  • Something I wrote on the Bee's FB page… I just can't think of any better way of saying it.

"This touched me. Hooniverse is made up of some of the greatest minds and personalities in the Automotive world. To be recognized is… truly humbling. Thanks everyone."

From the bottom of our hearts, Super-spouse, ZomBee and myself thank you. They were worthy opponents all, and I myself tried to vote for the Zyncro and the 'Vair (after first voting for the Bee, of course), a slew of choices that could only happen here on Hooniverse, simply the worlds greatest car website and community.

    So awesome….

You've come a long way, baby.

  • Jonny Lieberman

Congrats, Pete! And just so EVERYONE knows, I never wear the T-Shirt you gave me because it's tight and uncomfortable. I could lose weight, but fuck it!

  • Parid

I'm proud to have hosted a headswap for the killer bee on its way back home from ORP. Great racer, great friend, great car. GO BEES!

  • Having just gotten my interweb tubes back after not having any for a while, I missed out on the voting. Truth be told, I would have been torn between Jim's Corvair and the ZomBee, and would have had to flip a coin or something to decide between the two. Both are truly legendary cars. Congrats, Pete, and long may the ZomBee tear up the track at LeMons.

    • coupeZ600

Great to have you back Cappy, I thought I was actually going to have to call you up on a phone! See you in a couple of weeks!

  • Way to go Pete…well deserved and you received my one and only vote. Overall, I think, even with all the spam votes, this is a great contest with even greater cars. Can't wait to see the ZomBee back on the track again.

  • Number_Six

    Awesome. Congrats, team ZomBee!

  • corytate

    congratulations, phenomenal car

  • craigsu

Congrats Pete! Just imagine what you can do to the ZomBee with your prize winnings! Oh, wait…

    • Deartháir

That PARTICIPANT ribbon is highly-sought! It'll be worth a fortune some day!

      • craigsu

I'm sure he will fly it proudly from his rollcage. Maybe the staff could all chip in and buy him a 2011 HCOTY sticker for the ZomBee.

        • Deartháir

Hey now, let's not get crazy. We're not made of money.

  • TDI_FTW

I can't wait for the 2012 HCOTY, it'll be the only COTY award I'll be looking forward to!

  • dżejkob

I hope that 2012 will be HCOTY another other car from Poland:) My suggestion is FSO Syrena (Siren) like this one http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3647/3509728081_e95

Or maybe prototype Syrena Sport from 1960 http://www.syrena.nekla.eu/uploads/pub/pages/page

    Regards from Polish

  • Piotr

    Soviet admins deleted votes!

  • rcnetworksracing

Pete~ From the insane bunch of Southern California lackies who were just lazy enough to pony up money (instead of building their own POS) to race with you at Button Willow in the Arse Freeza Palooza this year! You worked hard and have and am reaping the awards of a crazy year of racing.
I am sure this is the first time that a Lucas/Brittish Leyland product has won a COTY of any fashion in the last 30 years. Well done sir!

It is was a privelage to be involved, in a small part. Congratulations!!

    Ron ZomBee

  • Captain Tinyvette

Congratulations Pete. That is an awesome and storied car.

By the way, did you see the recent issue of C&D? The Bee is on the cover! 😉
