Last Call- Rode Hard, Put Away Wet Edition

Robert Emslie December 9, 2011 Last Call

Driving in the wet is a particular challenge, especially in a rear-wheel drive car with enough ponies to break the backend loose. That being said, the rain sure makes for a purdy picture.

Floating an idea to the Forzaphiles around here… anybody up for a goofy themed race or two? I was inspired by the inclusion of a Fiero in this month's DLC pack to recreate the Team Ponticrap livery…:

…and from there the wheels started turning. Call it "Legends of LeMons." I'm thinking it could be a timed race event, with bonus laps awarded for best LeMons team homage and best original theme.

When will the stupid trends stop? Too small tires on rims just looks stupid.

Also, its not rain, its a car wash.

Rainy car pics are neat. Rainy driving not so much. I drove a Regal GS for the second time ever in the rain the other day and it hopped around on launch, not a good impression.

Did it give you Ion Redline memories?

The reviews I've read said it has almost no torque steer and they're right. It goes in a straight line while shaking the shit out of you when it launches. The good news is, the car doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart. Once you get past the whole front wheel drive thing, it's really awesome.

So I don't know if you folks get "black ice" this time of year (rain that fell during the day, but turned to ice once the sun went down and the clouds cleared), but here's a trick that Truck-Drivers have been using forever. You find a "bird-dog", somebody going just a bit slower/faster than you want to go traveling the same direction, and you tail them from a discrete distance. If there's spray coming off their tires, you're golden. If the spray stops, you know that they're on ice, and you probably are too.

Good tip. I wish I could have used that one back in December 1983 when black ice on a negative camber curve sent my 1978 Renault R17 Gordini off road and into a tree. I was only doing 15 MPH when I hit the curve. Wound up totaling the car once the insurance adjuster got a true repair cost.

  6. It's a conundrum, this car. Almost a paradox.

E30 says Enthusiastic Driver / BMW 3-Series connoiseur.

But Stretched Tyres and "Stanced" Posture positively screams "fashion victim / scenester".

    Should have been a convertible.
