Hooniverse Asks- What Car Do You Wish You Had a Cheap Carbon Copy Clone of?

Robert Emslie December 9, 2011 Hooniverse Asks

Everybody knows that there exist today more Shelby Cobra replica cars than the real deals, thus providing a broader audience the pleasures of the car’s brutal and basic driving experience. In fact, many classic cars that have reached the stratospheric levels of valuation that prevent their being used as was originally intended have seen their roles usurped by look-a-like stand-ins.

That’s all well and good because it saves the real McCoy for future generations while still letting everybody know what they were all about. Other cool cars that have gone the cheap clone route- Porsche’s Speedster and 356, Ferrari’s 308 GTB – which was feted with a Fiero-based homage called the Mera that you didn’t have to be Mr. Magoo to be fooled by.

All these cars – and 959-bodied Porsche 912s, etc are a huge boon for the enthusiast, and in the case of Speedsters and Cobras at least, have done nothing to dull the ascension in values of their real look-a-likes. That being said, Ferrari has been the most active in quashing the Xeroxing of their wares – actually demanding confiscation and destruction of faux Daytonas and 260Z-based GTOs like so many phony Rolex watches.

But I say nuts to them, and I myself would totally grow a third nut over owning a Speedster or 356 replica like the Intermeccanica above. At around $25K as apposed to the $300K plus of a real one, it could be driven without fear, and with subtle mods to its VW power plant, it would probably perform better too. How about you, are you good at faking it? If so, what car or truck would you most like to see knocked off?

I'm so freaking steaming mad right now: http://jalopnik.com/5874915/can-you-fit-in-a-suba… That Jstas fellow should go kiss a girl or something. There was a little discussion here today about the direction of the site, it went much better except for one comment. I liked one of Tim's replies in particular and Skitters. We are pretty sensitive bunch really and here the contributors will listen to opinion of readers I think, there the EIC wrote to me once, "I'd value your opinion, if it wasn't always wrong." Anyway I apologized back then (cause I was mean as well as him), glad I could let off a little steam here now, back to cub scout meeting planning.

Sorry,

Hey you want to participate in this here game with us? Please do. Tscheese… Why do I remember that name? Was she the one that came to Al Navarro's defense one day long long ago regarding him being a good dad to his daughter in a way that upset the sensibilities of the jezies?

I got starred on jalop, it was because I was doing this thing on Wednesdays where I would post videos on Volvos, VVVV. One time it was a White Stripes cover that Justin H liked. Isn't that random, anyway I always thought the stars were stupid, and I always got along well with Justin, I think that had the most to do with it.

Ooh, Polar's back? I've been back there about monthly but hadn't seen him yet.

I have been reading these once in a while (usually out of thinking "why is that old thread active again"), I'll give it a try.

I think it was her defending Al Navarro, but it's been a long time. She closed her account after the password apocalypse, and one of the major upgradeschanges broke Gawker/etc. for her work computer. (Plus she's busier at work now… at the money-management place she works in NYC, she moved from the call center to the compliance department about the same time as Gawker's IT started its downward trend.)

If you sort by 'newest first' it works better, except that this post has more than a hundred comments, doh! Also when you comment click subscribe to 'all new comments' and then you get notification via email. We always pick some old post so we are the only ones commenting, that or spam bots. It's fun to down vote and report the spam too. I use negative numbers for tangential stuff, for who knows what reason. One time in a picture game I was doing a few negative comments with Alff before the post was removed, hee hee hee.

Hi PT,

Polar comes and goes. When he shows-up he will comment late in the day say on some posts that happened in the mornings, he will have flurry, and then disappear again for a week or so after commenting for a few days. The post where I think I remember your sis from was one about purity balls. It's like a dance for daughters and fathers. The idea is to promote abstinence before marriage. The jez ladies went crazy from everything about eww creepy dads dancing with daughters to men controlling women to every girl needs to get boned etc. But a whole lot of disrespect to fathers that were basically just trying to keep their daughters from being hurt emotionally really.

Hi Skaycog,

Aga had a rough day yesterday on her birthday even. At work the old lady she is taking care of lost control of her bladder. Then at home the kids were especially trouble. She took practice pictures with Michelle and she was not happy about that. Aga needs to make a portfolio to get photography work. One nice thing is I got her a used laptop for the photography and this morning I made a nice breakfast. But she was bummed cause a friend had been critical of her photos. Her dad and me said they were great though and she did not listen to me, but did listen to her dad, so she seems better this morning. Plus the kids were really nice to her this morning, especially Jake. So I hope today goes better. I think this was the longest Mystery car since I got here. One time I got one in 30 minutes, and everybody was like wow that was a hard one, ha! That one happened to be cause PJ noticed the headlights, I saw his comment and then a light bulb went off in my head. Then some furious googling from what jogged my memory and I had it. They just don't want you to use reverse image search tools, googling is fine. I have exchanged some emails now about the wagon, thanks.

Hi Skaycog, Whoa that's ugly. Regarding Hawking <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16137007"&gt <a href="http://;http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16137007” target=”_blank”>;http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16137007 :

The diagnosis came as a great shock, but also helped shape his future. "Although there was a cloud hanging over my future, I found, to my surprise, that I was enjoying life in the present more than before. "I began to make progress with my research, and I got engaged to a girl called Jane Wilde, whom I had met just about the time my condition was diagnosed. "That engagement changed my life. It gave me something to live for." Up until 1974, Prof Hawking and his wife Jane, who by that time had three children together, managed his ALS largely on their own.

That's touching, though I think he has since divorced and remarried. He also had a very nice dedication to his wife and children in one of his earlier books for laypeople about black holes. I saw him once at college, his nurse was incredibly attractive, blonde, young, cute accent, and curvy. I saw some of that football game you did, we went o Red Robin for dinner, it was on the TV. I still don't understand that game. The Tebow guy (was it him?) seemed to pass very past and far. I wonder why in that game they never pass more than once per play? In Australian football (something like rugby) they can pass (and do) as long as the ball does not go any farther on subsequent passes. It seems to make the game much better to me. Hi BB, Things going better with Kevin again. Not great again but less shaking at least. He has to make a speech today in front of the entire school though, hope it goes well, it's pretty funny at least. Also we started pinewood derby cars. Have a good one, 5102

How interesting that you've seen Professor Hawking. Of course, you'd remember his curvy nurse. Anyway, it is quite a touching story indeed.

I understand football quite well, but I wouldn't be very good at explaining it to anyone. I just wish I wouldn't get so emotional over watching the Broncos. I used to get so nervous watching their games, that I'd go for a car ride. But……….I'd listen to the game on the car radio. Like I said previously………..women……….go figure.

Will the others find us here?

lol…I did reply to the wrong person in the last thread. Lets see if I can get it right here. I'm glad Aga is working things out. I agree, women are hard to figure out. I tell my girlfriend not to stress out about things too but it seems so much harder for her to forget about things than it is for me. My theory is that men can let things go more easily but then we forget more stuff too. Women tend to hang onto things more but are also better at remembering…at least in my own examples of life…lol.

I'm going to see Avicii in concert. He is headlining a charity tour to raise $1million to feed hungry people in America (even though he is from Sweden?). All of the profit is going towards this cause (at least I hope). And I like his music so it's a win-win! It's weird though, now I'm going to concerts where the artist is younger than I am. Here is his latest music video…

oh…and American football is similar to the Australian football you mentioned. The ball can be passed more than once per play as long as the ball does not go any farther on subsequent passes. It's pretty rare and is usually only used if the team is desperate for a score right at the end of a game.

• Tower_Of_Power says:

$kaycog…

And the Broncos win! Now you will have to suffer the nervousness for another week! I hope they continue, they would be my favorite team to win the Superbowl…except for the Packers of course…this season! I am jealous of your snow, I wish we could muster some more snow here…we've gotten less than five inches all season so far and it's all melted so everything is just brown and dull.

5105

• $kaycog says:

TowerofPower…….What a good cause Avicii is supporting in his concert. I'm very impressed, especially when he's not even from the US. I hope you have a good time.

Yes……..woman have an incredible memory! I see that you have found that out. It really is something.

I'm going to have to settle myself down somehow for the Bronco/Patriots game Saturday. I don't know how, but I really need to do something. I can't not watch the game. Maybe I'll see what a bottle of wine will do.

Yeah that music by Avicii is great! I never knew of it, thanks! Lately I have been listening to Daft Punk when working to keep me in the groove and I have made Jake a real fan. Last night when I was taking him to wrestling he wanted to listen to Harder Better Faster Stronger to get him going, so I turned it on and he was dancing in the back, ha! It was strange sound though in his winter jacket, like a record, so worked well :)

I liked the chairs, desks, and terminals in that video, similar to some here at work. Also one of the office workers reminds me of a scary HR employee here that does all the sexual harassment training for new employees! The Europeans have some happy music I like to call it. I got to see a DJ Bobo concert in Budapest, it was awesome, they had these huge human topped spider puppet things, but I could not find a video.

Skaycog,

I've chilled about yesterday, maybe I should have drank a bottle of wine like you will this weekend. Anyway, glad I had a secret place to vent. If I had an account I probably would have been banned over there for what I wanted to write. But I kissed Aga instead, we watched an entire movie last night, which is rare usually fall asleep watching films late at night. We went to sleep late though, oh well. The movie was Bridesmaids, wow was the Porsche owner portrayed badly! There were a few very funny but crude parts, but overall, I would not watch the film again. We watched Willow recently with the kids, and now are watching The Princess Bride again, those are great!

You don't mean Texan do you? I think he's like 20, but his heart is in the right place. I wish he had not replied to Brt that way, whatever. Anyway he's had a bunch of funny adventures with his old truck, I feel younger when I hear about them, living vicariously through him, that sort of thing.

It's snowing here, could be a lot. The power went out at the 911 dispatch last night and Andrew had to go over there at 1AM. We had to move the den meeting to our place and I want him to get some sleep. It's going to be crazy if we have a meeting. Have I ever said how awesome Andrew is? If not I will some time, but he's the kind of guy that literally is a life saver with the 911 thing today.

Here's a neat video with a 412 to get me in a good mood. I've been oogling a dino I can afford recently, but we had to lend money to my parents, so that won't happen, but I can dream!

When I called the power company, a recording said that they were aware of a power outage in South Central Colorado. I found out this morning that a car hit a power pole in town. I was so glad that power came back on.

No, I don't mean Texan………I don't know him. I meant Jstas. I'm glad you're in a better frame of mind, and things at your home seem to be running smoother.

Hi Skaycog,

Man I was laughing so much here at work, glad everybody was away for lunch. It was that picture that Flick posted in the mystery car to PBJ. I was up really late, it took me 2.5 hours to make funny t-shirt gift for Aga:

<img src="http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7929/cameratshirt.gif" width="500">

Maybe that's why I was laughing so hard, the not much sleep lat three nights. I was getting all the advancements and achievement stuff organized for the den since they need to order a bunch of stuff for the ceremonies that they have next month. Anyway the shirt. It did not really turn-out the way I wanted. We make silly t-shirts, last one I made was last Valentine's I think. I used this company before and yo can get this shiny iron-on looking art done. I used it once before, but only for text. Well I just could not get it to be right last night. Was the first time I was doing anything like this with SVG. So I decided to make it a PNG and just get it printed as a photo, give-up on the shiny. But then I could not rotate that lens glare properly, gave-up eventually on that. See imagine the half moon shape on the bottom, and then when I get the shirt I cut out the dark football looking part wit enough of the dye to help hold the threads together, hee hee ;) Anyway still funny.

Oh man you are so right about getting in the right state of mind and having other stuff to get upset about. Anyway I'm all my cheery self again. I'm going to meet some friends tonight and drink, you have any nice plans? No work on Monday for me, lucky me!

I hope you enjoyed your evening of drinking with friends was fun for you. That's a great t-shirt for your wife. Good job.

Hi Skaycog,

It's been very busy for me with work and cars. Yesterday I went to lunch with Aga, that was very nice, but I have had pain in my stomach since Tuesday. Still there, hope it goes away. I finished (sort of) the pinewood derby cars this morning at 1:30AM. I went to work since I have a vice there to install the wheels. Well I had all sorts of trouble, worst was wood splitting. I ended-up drilling bigger holes and gluing the axles in, but they are all crooked, it's a real shame, cause otherwise the cars are very good. I might have to do something else about those wheels, so maybe I am not done in fact, sigh.

Today Michelle is doing the spelling bee at school, I hope she does well, tomorrow I am DD, taking Aga and some friends to a place where there is a magician and karaoke. I was going to go as well, Aga asked me if check in for the derby is on Friday. I said no it's on Saturday morning, so she planned that. But she did not realize that I am on setup on Friday. So I'm kind of bummed about that, I love to have fun with her, I wish I could go somehow. Also kids have no school tomorrow, I was going to go to museum with kids, but it's supposed to snow so badly that that will not happen now.

Dang sorry to be a downer, there are a lot of great things, like lunch with Aga yesterday, I'll try and focus on that and get in a better state of mind. Nice to have you to vent to sometimes, i hope it does not bring you down in anyway. It's all silly stuff that does not matter a day later or so anyway.

Here's something coo, Racin is headed to Brazil for work on Saturaday I think. That's exciting!

Have a good one,

zms, smz, tgf……….How's the pinewood derby cars by now? You've had your problems with them. Also, how's your stomach feeling? It seems like things are pretty stressful for you now. By all means, vent here. There's nothing we can do about it, but we're here to listen anyway. Racin' going to Brazil to work? I hope that's just temporarily. For how long? Family going with? I hope things are going better for you.

5114

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

Everything is much better today. Michelle got third place in her school for the spelling bee! The top finisher in fourth grade :) We're so proud of her! My stomach seems almost better and the cars seem to be put together. I took a dremel with fuzzy disc to the wheels and they all flew off! So I made these pins from wood staples. A few do overs and now the wheels stay on with the dremel spinning them-up so they should stay on at normal speeds. I say that, but last year we lost a wheel and the first year as well :)

Harvey a dad called me last night. "How do I get the wheels on." "I'll be right over!" HA :) So I took a 5/64" drill bit and some other stuff and helped him and his son. Now I know what to do myself next year, watch me forget ;) Harvey is very nice guy, we are almost neighbors, recently his father in law has been doing badly, and he has been helping a lot, and his job situation is pretty rough, Aga has watched their kids when the parents are not around. But there was a heart warming thing recently. I went with Michele to Walmart and in the parking lot was Harvey's son with another dad. It's another dad I really like. He was wheeling Kyle around in the shopping cart all funny. This guy maybe five years ago started cancer treatment, it was really something to see him just enjoying life and making a kid happy. He's like that a lot why I like the guy. So yeah I pushed Michelle around in the shopping cart all silly after that :) She's here at work with me right now, I'm not going to get much done today, screw it, don't matter!

5115 – neato

PS: The t-shirts came in the mail, I could not resist, and gave them to Aga. She loved them! Said it was very funny and clever and could not believe that I came-up with it. Also her lights came in, I'll try and install them Sunday after the wrestling meet.

• $kaycog says:

szm, zms, quo……….Glad to hear things were better for you today. It does sound like you had your hands full with the pinewood derby cars. Good for Michelle! I know you're all very proud of her. What did she do while with you at your job? I hope your weekend is wonderful. Mine is going to be normal weekend with extra work at home getting papers together for income tax. Also……shredding papers. You never answered my questions about Racin'.

5116

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

Whoops, sorry. Racin is in Brazil for his job, it's only him and a huy from there that first came over here. I think he is south of San Paulo. His wife is traveling right now a lot with her job too, it's pretty dang hectic time for them. Kids are staying with parents and nanny.

When Michelle was here she talked a lot. Aga was all, "Oh you'll have no problem working." Well I think i had 1.5 hours to work or so :) We went to the library here, to the 15th floor, I explained molecules, atoms, nucleus, up and down quarks, and electron. We also watched a video about physics, but she got bored with that and we stopped. I think I got the point across how neat it is that all matter we see day to day is made just of two quarks and electrons, a lot simpler than chemistry with hundred+ atoms in the periodic table. We also had lunch here, and she got a borrowed a learn Polish CD, which also she got bored with quickly.

Jake won wrestling yesterday!

• $kaycog says:

smz, szm, zzz……….Congrats on funniest/weirdest design on pinewood derby car! That makes the time and effort you put into it very worthwhile. Also, yay to Jake for his wrestling trophy. He'll probably cherish that forever. Nothing new with me other than some bothersome sleeping habits. Yesterday morning, I awoke at 3AM and couldn't get back to sleep. This morning it was 4AM. I do that every once in awhile for no apparent reason, and I hate it.

Happy Taco Tuesday!

5118

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

Sorry to hear about your sleeplessness :( (wow that's actually a real word!) Man I really think there is something I am forgetting about that you asked about, whatever it was, sorry. I figure you doing the taxes was so exciting that you still can't get any sleep yet. I have had some bad nights of sleep too, it's been largely cause I fret about all the work i have, won't have much more time to chase storms this week, sorry.

Anyway, I looked at the trophies, it was not weirdest that Jake won, but weirdest shape :) We made these two snakes that wrap around each other. He did the last dremeling step, sanding, and painting. Kevin had a fried chicken leg, I have to say it really was very funny! He had a great idea, to use sand paper for the breaded fried look of the skin, and it did turn out very good, though I attached most of that, it was hard to do so it would not get in the way of the wheels. Other than the first few cuts to get the general shape he did everything else. Oh I also had to hold his hand when he was using thebit that looked like a gigantic dentist drill. I am very happy that his hands have stopped being shakey again. Man I was worried about that. Also the boys worked with me to smooth the axles and wheels and to shave the insides of the wheels down.

Now again our cars were not fast, Kevin's was the second slowest, but whatever. I am going to be running the races next year. I was learning everything I could from the guy that has run it the last few years, but I have a feeling he did something very nice. Kevin was always last, every race, then suddenly on the last heat he came in first. There was no way to affect who would win at that point, I think he put the the cars down in a way so that Kevin would win one race. You have no idea how happy Kevin was :)

It was a long weekend though, Friday started putting the derby together in the middle of a giant snow storm here. Got home 11:30PM. The next morning I was there 8AM for check in, back home at 10:30AM. 11:30AM back for the derby, then clean-up, getting the track into the guys house that stores it, was home 6:30PM. The next morning up at 6AM for the wrestling where I was selling concessions with Michelle.

Oh I almost forgot, this was funny. Aga is really crazy about that American Idol show. On Sunday there was supposed to be an episode, but after the football games. I think it started here at 11PM finally. So we were in bed and she was watching the football waiting for it to finally end. She says to me, "I can see why people like watching this."

"Huh?"

"They are so muscular. And look at their crotches!"

"You know they wear cups, right?"

'Huh?"

Ha hahaha!

Have a good one,
5119

PS: I have the lights made for Aga, somehow I found time for that Sat and Sun :) She now wants one more mounted permanently to the ceiling :( She's lucky she looks so danged good in a bikini.

zsm, zms,xxx……..Dang! I thought I'd take a brisk walk this morning, but I didn't realize there was a breeze. The temp is in low 30's, but it felt like below zero. It was a very short walk, needless to say. I got tickled at your comment about Aga and football. Now she knows why I like the sport. ;) I watch American Idol sometimes, and it's so funny now with the elimination rounds. It sounds like you're going to be super busy this week. Good luck with that! Happy Hump Wednesday!

Hi Skaycog,

Work's not going well, really bogging and hard to make progress, things not making sense to me and generally I seem to break more than fix with everything I try, argh! Some weeks are just like that, oh well…

Here's a photo of the pinewood derby cars. There have been a lot of cold walks with Max for us here, he has a little sweater he wears when it's really bad. If he wears it in the house though he gets so comfy he naps all day :)

That's a lot like what happens to Kevin. I'll have to read it later, the featured comment was basically "she's faking it for attention" Okay internet smart guy :( The hands are more shaky than that wiggling of fingers, but a lot of the same other stuff.

Have a good one,

msz, mzs, bbq……*yawn*…….Monday morning. I just replied to Blathering Seagulls what you asked. I'll let you know when I get an answer from him. You seem to be looking for another car? I'm really bright, you know……I figured that out. ;)

Your derby cars are really cute……your kids will really get a kick out of them when they're adults. Sorry things are so crappy at work for you. I hope this week brings an improvement. How was your weekend? Mine was much like every other one, except I was able to watch the Rolex 24 for about a total of 90 minutes. It was kinda interesting. I've never seen any of it before.

Have a good Monday!

5122

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

Why yes I am looking for a winter car and also one I can drive while I put an over drive into the Amazon. That red wagon Aga really likes in particular. I wanted something a bit older, less money, and simpler to work on, but remember what I wrote about the husbands should take wife advice on big purchases, applies to me too. Plus that 240 guy really thinks his is worth a grand and in no hurry to sell.

I was busy this weekend. Here's the craziest thing, I had a plumbing problem while guests were over for Aga's birthday party! The kitchen sink over flowed. So I was under there taking pipes off and unclogging while making coffee etc. Aga was really proud of me. Only right at the end did any guests find out something was up thanks to my uncle not being able to keep his mouth shut.

The mystery car has got me stumped but I just know I know what it is. It's infuriating. Thanks for writing that guy on oppo for me. I finished Aga's portable studio yesterday!

Have a good one,
5123

• $kaycog says:

zms, szm, tdy……….Good for you fixing the plumbing while you had guests. Mr. Handi-Fixit Guy! I just got a reply from Blathering Seagulls: http://jalopnik.com/oppositelock/forum?comment=46

My Monday is going extremely well. Had a taco salad for lunch.

5124

• $kaycog says:

szm, mzs, dad……..I saw on Oppo what the mystery car was. That's the longest I've seen it go before somebody guessed it. I don't try anymore, because I guess you aren't supposed to Google or Tineye or whatever. I don't stand a chance.

Yes, I still have your email address. I'll PM it to him.

5125

• $kaycog says:

smz, zms, you……..Another fast day; Tuesday evening is here already, and it's the last day of January. It was probably the warmest and driest January I've ever seen here. I hope Aga is in a better mood now. She had a lot going on at the same time which is harder for her to cope with, which makes it hard for you and the kids. Such is life.

This is really a confusing thread. For one thing, I picked a too long of one. I was so tickled to see Alff as the first comment that I didn't pay any attention to how many comments there were.

Have a good evening!

5127

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

Don't worry about it, I think we've been doing a great job on this thread anyway. Aga was doing better right up until it was time to put the kids to sleep. Kevin in particular had a lot of homework, plus the boys had wrestling practice. Maybe today will be great. She does get 2 or 3 rough days a month, just woman stuff I don't get really. I was helping out as much as I could, dishes, homework, dinner, Max, etc. Learned long ago not much you can do about that spike in hormones time. Plus she is really freaking-out about the photography, oh well.

It was nice day at home for me though. When Michelle finished her homework with my help, we started drawing. We are trying to do some watercolors, Michelle is drawing a fairy for her teacher and I am trying to draw Aga of course. Michelle's is turning-out really well, mine looks like a robot or something so far, ha! I also read to Jake. He really likes encyclopedic books instead of story books lately. This one was all about fastest, biggest, etc. It's kind of depressing that the fastest and highest flying planes were two versions of the same one made in the '60s. I sort of hope there is some secret weapon/spy plane we will learn about in 20 years that's even more awesome.

Got any plans for Super Bowl?

Have a good one,

msz, smz, sup…………I'll see if I can get this typed before I lose internet again. It has been going off and on for a couple of hours. After this, I'm signing off for the night. Yeah, women and their mood swing every month is a pain in the ass for all concerned, even us. At least most of you guys are aware of it and act accordingly, but poor you guys. Re your reply to me about the Buick SW and alerting Buickboy. We haven't seen him for about a week in Stormchasers. Jguttes and I are the only ones there now. I hope everything is okay with BB. He's a sweet young man.

Have a great Wednesday evening! Later!

5129

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

I hope BB is doing well. He does seem to get busy with life and come and go, so I think it's just that. Man a women went off on me yesterday, it was on the book of faces. I was just trying to be helpful. I am really lucky to be married to Aga. You can get an account there. You can just register as S. Kay Cog or something like that and then never put anything personal there. I have a friend that that was known as Jake McHates and his photo was the Jack in the Box mascot. This year his new years resolution was to be himself on facebook, ha! Anyway why you would like it: A lot of the people from the old days and now are on there. Last night the conversations ranged from alcohol, car advice, but the best was Syrax was asking about love advice. Lot's of great advice and stories!

Have a good one,
5130

PS: If you want, introduce Jguttes to the game here.

PPS: Still have not heard back from my Volvo experts about Seagulls Volvo :(

PPPS: On the waiting list for NASCAR tickets for Kevin's birthday :)

• $kaycog says:

smz, zsm, ddt…………I really have no interest in FB, as I don't have the inclination to join, and I really don't have the time. During the day, I have the auto blogs, and that's enough. I don't do Twitter either.

I had my bi-monthly out-of-town appointment today……….and……Chinese buffet. It was delicious, as always. On the way there, I saw an early ('32?) roadster driving down the highway, of course, with no top. It was a matte black and had a big red 28 painted on the grill. It was 35 degrees, and the driver was really bundled up. He pulled over at a wide spot. I wonder if he was road testing it. Not the best weather to be cruising in a hot rod.

5131

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Skaycog,

FB can suck people in, Aga was like that for a while, thankfully not anymore. The latest craze is pinterest, one of her friends has it bad. It is this web site to share bookmarks. I really liked FB initially since it let me see what had happened to childhood friends. I even went through a spree there of meeting with them, that was fun. The used laptop I bought from one of them.

A hotrod, what a sight for the winter! How was your meeting with your parole officer? I'm kidding of course ;) Oh god that could be not funny if it's something like chemo :( Sometimes I should think before typing, ah what good is there in thinking too much about things. See…..

Do you ever go through the comments on these game posts? I just did here, lots of great cars and photos. Isn't this a nice place with great people, ahhhh…. Sometimes I worry that it will change like jalopnik did. I hope not, I hope that since the people here created this place because of what happened over there. But man was there ugliness going on in Kamil's post today. I got a comment deleted where someone posted someone else's address and phone number to harass someone! I was hoping people could start kidding and turn that around, didn't work, but Scroggs, Alff, Harrel, I, and others tried.

See what happens when I think. Stupid. I miss your trophies. Yesterday giz posted a really mean article and I decided I would not go to visit anymore gawker sites. So then COTD rolls around. I could not resist. Was WORTH IT, wow! But no more, not today. It's so hard though, you have no idea. Your COTD trophies were like some kind of crack for me or somrhing it seems.

Anyway look I made to 100! What are your plans for Super Bowl? We have none. Oh max got a hair (fur?) cut. He's so cute. The groomer said he holds on like a koala bear when she carried him, and yeah that's true, he really does, great description for it.

Have a good one,
5132

PS: Skimming this over I can see I am stressed, whoa. Yesterday i worked 13 hours :( I spent too much time commenting today, don't worry if you don't hear from me until next week, just doing the right thing and not letting Mystery Car get the best of me when I need to work.

• $kaycog says:

mzs, szm, sno……The blizzard you might be hearing about in Colorado didn't reach me. The Northern parts got 2' of snow, but we got less than .5". They were forecasting 3 to 5 inches for us, but they missed that prediction. Darn! A lot of times I don't have time to even read all the posts here or even at Jalopnik. Even when I do have the time, if it's not of interest to me, I don't read. I finally heard from Buickboy………his internet has been down, so at least he's okay.

If you didn't see my COTD award yesterday, it was quite titillating. The replies I get are usually hilarious……you guys are so predictable. No plans for the Super Bowl. I'll have it on TV in the background, but I really don't care who wins, so it's not as much fun to watch.

Happy TGIF!

Hi Skaycog,

I have some bad news. My aunt has uterine cancer. Hopefully they caught it early enough, only started bleeding two weeks ago, at first she thought it was a period. Can't concentrate right now. I'm just thinking about her, her kids, and my uncle. It's terrible feeling.

Fuck cancer,

Whew…it’s been a little while. Reading your past posts it sounds like you’ve been incredibly busy these past few weeks! And then I updated the website and saw your bad news. I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. Hopefully it's early and the cancer can be treated/eliminated. My grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago, and my aunt with breast cancer 9 years ago. Both have survived and are doing well as of now. Cancer is a heck of a thing, and doesn't really seem fair. I really, truly hope that she pulls through it.

I haven't been around in a while. I got slammed pretty hard with year-end work the day after my last post. But we are through it now and hopefully returning to normal around here. I did manage to cram a couple of things in though, including that concert, which was one of the best I’ve been to! He played until 2am and with work the next day, I didn’t hardly get any sleep, but I made it!

I also squeezed in my first ever ice-race with the Subaru a couple of weeks ago. I came in last place out of 6 people in the AWD class, but I had a lot of fun doing it! I kept driving way too aggressively and would slide sideways into the deep snow, really killing my momentum, but it was a heck of a learning experience for driving in slippery weather.

I'm sorry to hear about your Broncos…at least the wine was good right! It's such a bummer, I really would have liked any other teams to have made it to the superbowl besides the two going. Oh well, Sunday will be a good day (39 degrees and sunny!) to wash the cars!

Have a good Friday/weekend!

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Tower,

Sorry to hear about all your work, cancer is not fair at all, glad to hear your family is doing well. Uterine cancer has good prognosis, we will know more on Monday. Lung cancer in particular has bad odds. Good job on the ice racing. Look in a mirror, yeah that's awesome that dude.

Hi Skaycog,

Did you notice who won Mystery Car today ;) I'll just trophy myself here.

I'll write to Seagull that I will not look at the V70 sadly this weekend like I was. I might have to lend the money to my family. I was supposed to get a big chunk back that I had loaned to my parents today, but now my aunt might need it soon. Plus I might have to come back in to work tomorrow :(

Sorry to bug you again, but I saw on TTAC that Ash is really fed-up with TTAC and jalopnik. I tried to write to him a comment over there to come to hooniverse, but that site must filter the comments and it would not let me! That's aggravating. Could you let him know. I don't think he knows that hooniverse has grown and is much more than it was before when he might have checked. Thanks http://jalopnik.com/people/Ash78

Going home now to play with kids :) We have quite the train set we've made in the living room.

A big fuck you to you cancer once more,

Congratulations, Mr. mzs zsm msz esq, on being Mystery Car winner. I would like to gift you with this cool Amazon which this equally cool lovely lady will deliver to you soon. Good job! I had looked at that post several times yesterday, but nobody guessed it. Then I got busy and didn't have time to check. I PMd Ash and quoted to him your comment. I don't know if he'll reply or not. Too bad about the V70, but evidently it wasn't meant to be. I'm ready to get shopping done early as the stores are going to be a madhouse all weekend what with it being first weekend of the month and Superbowl weekend. Sorry you have to work today.

Again, congrats on Mystery Car!

TowerofPower…….Way to go on the ice racing!! That really sounds like a lot of fun. I figured you have been extra busy since we hadn't heard from you for some time. As I said to mzs, I'm ready to get shopping done way early today. I really don't care who wins the Superbowl, as I like both teams and quarterbacks. It's no fun if you don't have a favorite team to root for. Of course, if I did, I'd have to have a bottle of wine to calm my nerves. Have a great weekend!

Hi Tower,

I forgot to ask. Are you going to the Chicago auto show this year? Kids get off of school early on the 17th. I was going to leave home 1:30PM with my sons and get there around 2:30PM. Anyway that's the tentative plan for me.

Hi Skaycog,

Thanks for the Amazon, pretty. That model owns that one even! The pictures in the photo shoot get better. Aga and I took a nap today, that was very nice. Other than that was pretty busy day, though I made dominos with Jake in the train set. That was fun. Now Aga and I will be playing games. Look who checked me out:

smz, zsm, aaa…….Monday already…..pfft. I had a good weekend, as always, but it just flew by, again as always. The Superbowl was pretty good considering I didn't care who won. Congrats to the Giants and Eli Manning! The only part of the half time show I enjoyed was Madonna's last song, one of her oldies. I didn't think the commercials were as good as in previous years.

I did have PM from Ash this morning…."Hey, skay! Al Navarro actually invited me over there when they were first starting out…it was a little spartan, but nice to see so much of the "old crowd" from Jalopnik over there. I don't know what happened to this place, but every successive revision to commenting and layout seems to be a step in the wrong direction. Thanks for the invite and I'll be sure to poke my head in over there. -Ash"

Hi Skycog,

They installed a muffler on the fan that cools the new power supply outside my door on Saturday! It's SO much better now. I had a busy weekend. Was working on Saturday and Sunday, but I am close now I think with that stubborn code I am working on. Two projects are depending on it. Yesterday night when I got home from work Aga told me the toilet was backed-up in the kids bathroom. Well not only that it was flooded over the floor, gross. I was up until 12:30AM cleaning and fixing.

I hope that Ash comes in for the Monday Classic Caption :)

Have a good one,

smz, szm, cat……..I awoke this morning to 4" of beautiful snow. It really is a winter wonderland out there. It's ever so lightly snowing now too. I hope you got your plumbing problems fixed……..what happened that the toilet overflowed? Ash didn't say he was going to comment here, he just said "poke my head in". I don't think we'll be seeing him here. Not much going on with me……..going out to dinner tonight, but don't know where.

Happy Taco Tuesday!

I just saw that Ash posted on Last Call :) It is snowing here too, was raining earlier, yuck, could be bad on the roads. The toilet was flooded since my kids must have flushed it when it was clogged :( They use way too much toilet paper. We had Palestinian food on Sunday, that was great. Maybe you have a place like that near-by? I had chicken kafiaka or something like that was the name. It was a roasted flavored chicken in a pita with cucumbers mainly, very good. I also had lentil soup, but it was not as good as the Polish and Hungarian styles I have had before. Oh and baklava, that was sweet and good!

Aga and I had a great night yesterday, we played lots of games. Also talked about our vacation coming-up to Houston. But the most exciting thing to me is that her mom is bringing a new bikini for Aga, which is supposed to be really nice. We are going to the beach in Galveston, yes I am excited! Oh and Olympics are coming, which means women's beach volleyball ;) Okay soccer.

Have a good one,
5145

PS: Made some sweet dominos last night with the boys. There are really neat videos on youtube of huge set-ups of dominos falling down, impressive.

• $kaycog says:

szm, szm, bug……….That's a nice picture of your aunt. She's a very pretty lady. Today is the day to find out? I wish for the best. There could be Palestinian restaurant in bigger cities, but not in my small town, but it sounds interesting. I did see where Ash commented in Last Call on Monday. I also see that he commented this morning. Hopefully, he'll be a regular here. I've been to Houston and Galveston, and I really liked the latter. It's Wednesday……..yippee!

5146

• Alff says:

So MZS, is it just a coincidence that you mentioned having Palestinian food immediately after posting that your kids used too much tp, or are those thoughts connected?

5147.

• mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

Hi Alff,

It could be a concerted targeted use of biological weapons in an act of international terrorism or that my kids are idiots. Maybe I should have Palestinian again this weekend, tasted good enough, need more data. Where did you get the nifty line art from this morning? I need Valentine's advice, any ideas? My plan was to have the kids run a restaurant in the house for a special dinner, like Michelle is waitress, Jake and Kevin cooks, but thinking it through some more Tuesdays is rough on account of wrestling and gymnastics practice.

Skaycog,

My aunt is an awesome person, that's the one that used to work as a car mechanic rebuilding alternators and starters from semi trucks! Back when I was younger I had a crush on her youngest sister, she was very smart, had these glasses, now is a lawyer, but of all her sisters, she ended-up looking the best as she aged, by far. My uncle is a lucky guy. Great news, the cancer is in the very earliest stages. Will be getting surgery on the 20th and that should be the end of it. What did you like about Galveston? I think we are basically going to the beach there.

Have a good one,
5148

• $kaycog says:

smz, szm, joy……..I liked Galveston because of its uniqueness. It was so refreshing after being in Houston.

Original examples trade for seven figures, and there's soooooo many rusty or side hit 4 cylinder Alfas out there that could donate mechanical bits, it seems like a no-brainer to me. One of the American Alfa parts houses sold a TZ1 kit that used Alfetta front suspension bits, but it's no longer available. I dimly recall some European kit car making TZ2s, but IIRC they started at 6 figures instead of 7!

I've had a picture in my head since I was maybe twelve, product of a daydream and doodled badly ten thousand times since.

A Shelby Daytona with a bunch of Webbers sticking out of the hood. And, taller and outside those Webbers, eight chromed exhaust pipes sticking straight up about 18 inches, with jets of fire coming out of them.

Not pretty. Not even a little bit. Sorta like putting horns and fangs on the Mona Lisa. But mean as hell. People would hate it. But if I'm ever rich enough to build it, I won't care.

• Scandinavian Flick says:

You paint a mean mental image. I like it. A lot.

But then, I'm pretty blasphemous like that. One of my impossible dream projects involves a blown big block (think 502 with an 8/71) with the gorgeous, highly polished supercharger hanging out of the hood of an otherwise stock looking BMW 740iL with widened M-parallels. It would probably have to be tubbed…

• Irishzombieman says:

It's funny how the motivation behind a car like that determines whether or not I like it.

Example: Rusty Slammington below. I don't much like ratrods or stance cars, but I love this. This car was genuine artistic motivation.

<img src="http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/10/stanceworks.jpg" width=500>

The Dragon Vette's another. The more I think about the thing, the more I feel a message of ironic absurdity coming out of it.

I still don't like it. But I think I appreciate what that cat is saying with it.

All that to say automotive blasphemy, when properly and internally motivated, is an awesome means of self expression, though in a lot of cases not everyone will be intuitive enough to get it. That's okay though. It has to be done as an expression of one's self. It fails if it's done for the sake of being understood.

Picturing a Beemer 7 with a huge blower. Diggin' it.

<img src="http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/12/2011/11/8e8e62fca82f9ae04f0d3629bd41090e.jpg" width=500>

• Scandinavian Flick says:

I really wish I could add something to that without just saying "+1" or "I agree", but heck, I do and you summed it up nicely.

• jeepjeff says:

Rusty slammington is strangely compelling.

I'm beginning to wonder if any of us don't harbor some desire for automotive blasphemy, maybe it's a specific blasphemy, maybe it is just an appreciation for well meaning or well done blasphemies.

My current dream is to build a Locost with a worked over SBF. That should provide way too much torque and horsepower (who needs the rear wheels to stick to the ground?). I am actively considering painting it black with hot rod flames.

• Irishzombieman says:

Ach! The Locost! Another thing I try not to think too much about.

I ordered Ron Champion's book through the local library and was blown away at the thought of building a complete car from near-scratch. I don't know how to weld, but that would be the perfect self-teaching process. I know nothing about suspension, but would be pretty well versed by the end.So many things I don't know that I'd learn in the process of building that car.

And my kids could learn them, too. . . .

That car turns quickly into obsessive daydreams. Black with flames would look fantastic.Picturing it with real flames from that motor roaring through esses. . . .

Gaa! Like smoking a cigarette after months without. Must. Get. Work. Done.

• jeepjeff says:

My problem: I already know how to weld.

It's a great reason to learn how to weld. I'd strongly suggest taking a course at a community college or tech school. It really helps to have someone who really knows what he is doing show you how to do it right (the weld needs to go all the way through, but not burn out the metal, you need to not get inclusions or oxidation inside the weld, and so on). I need to get back into it before I feel comfortable welding up suspension mounts.

(I just bought the Haynes Roadster book, as it is the one still in print. Between it and McSorley's site amongst others, I'll figure something out. Sorry about your Friday afternoon productivity, particularly after posting the McSorley link. I need to get back to work too.)

EDIT: Thanks for the thumbs up on the black with flames. You may have just pushed me past the edge on that one.

• Irishzombieman says:

In case of any confucion, and for readers coming along later, when I said "Picturing it with real flames from that motor," I meant the pipes.

Though the mental image of a car racing around with an engine in flames is terribly funny.

Have a great weekend.

• Scandinavian Flick says:

A Locost rod… That's brilliant. Do it!! Some may argue that it would defeat the purpose, but really, isn't the sole purpose of such a car to bring driving enjoyment? If you aren't enjoying what you have created, especially for fear of what others might think of you or your creation, then that's when you have failed. It's always nice to have the support or validation of others, but in the end, it's your car. You are the one who should love it.

• Irishzombieman says:

Me and two friends just went to our first LeMons race (as spectators) last weekend. This was the first step in our two year plan to get into the game.

Step 2–buying a car– isn't supposed to happen for 6 months, during which time we scrimp and save and don't ignore our kiddos and wives.

But Step 1 led to entirely too much enthusiasm and it's been hard to ignore
–those Lancias
–a $400 running but title-less Prelude
–a $400 frickin' Hudson Hornet, sans engine and motor but otherwise intact and straight
–a $350 complete 455-powered ran-when-parked boattail Riviera
and others.

We made the schedule so we wouldn't spend too much money at once and so our wives wouldn't say no right off the bat. I've had to quit going to Craigslist.

I think a Scorpion body made it into LeMons on top of another car. But I don't think an entire car has done it yet. You're right; pure danged gold.

I love kit cars. I LOVE kit cars. I have been trying to figure out how to build one for a couple years now (I live in the Bay Area, sheds are expensive, but there has been progress, the housing bubble pop seems to have caused stuff to crash just into the affordable range…).

Anyway, FFR has already been mentioned, and all their kits are awesome (I like the c*bra and 33 Ford kits the best, but all are excellent). RCR makes a bunch of awesome kits as well, most notably of the GT40 and the 917. Were flat-12 engines readily available, I don't know that I'd be able to talk myself out of their 917 (as cool as using a Porsche flat-6 is, the original had that 5.4L flat-12). Then there are the Stratos kits, the speedster kits and Lotus 7s. All of them wonderful, all of them I want.

However, while it has been tried, no one seems to have ever made money building Bugatti Type 35 (or similar) replicas.

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Bugatti_Typ_35C_Grand_Prix_Racer_1926.jpg" height="283" width="500" />

And part of me really wants one. My only hangup is the front suspension. The were designed with the suspension technology of the time, and trying to put wishbones on it would look wrong (even if you finagled some kind of pullrod system for the shocks and springs). I think I just need to get the go-fast car bug out of my system before I think of building one of these. Also, like the 917, I'd want a straight 8.

30. Tiller188 says:

I've always loved GT40 replicas (done well…), and there've been some great answers here so far that I now find myself wishing for (Alfa 33, and Allard J2X as a nice alternative to a Seven). That said, I think I have to add this, just because it's so pretty:

<img src="http://www.pistonheads.com/pics/news/15097/jaguar_xj13_1966-L.jpg", width="500">

<img src="http://www.diecast.org/data/sac_cars/aa73541_4.jpg", width="500">

I think there is at least one company making replicas of these, but now I forget who/where. I'd never fit (another 6'4", checking in), and the engine choice would be pretty well limited to a carbureted V12 of some kind (because how could you not want to replicate the view through that rear cover…), but boy would it be cool.

Porsche GT3RS mechanicals would be fine. I've never gotten around to the show, but I know I want that car!

32. mnm4ever says:

The problem with kit cars is most of them are played out. Who wants yet another Cobra kit? Everyone knows every Cobra is fake, same with any fake Ferrari Daytona or fake GT40, because the real ones are well known to be crazy expensive. IMO, you have to pick something that is obscure enough that most people dont really know exactly what they look like, but not so obscure that people will just think its a really crappy 70s generic kit car instead of the real thing, like the Scarab.

And people already picked my two choices, but I will mention them again anyway. The 356 is perfect, but not a Speedster, which no one will ever believe is real. I would get a 356 coupe, with some nice performance enhancements. But I would really love a Lancia Stratos, but the kits are really expensive.

• jeepjeff says:

I don't think kit Cobras are played out. Yes, they are common with respect to the original vehicles and with respect to the kit car market as a whole, but how many have you seen on the road? I mean, seriously, how many, just driving around? I've seen three. I live in a car mecca, and two of the sightings have been on extended road trips well away from said car mecca.

The major thing that has me jonesing to build a Locost over an FFR Roadster is twofold:
1) I get to build the whole car from scratch, including the frame.
2) I can just start. I don't need to save (as much) to get going.

Both are awesome cars. The originals easily make my top 10 favorite cars of all time. I'd love a replica of either.

(There is one other point in favor of the Locost. As the TopGear three stooges pointed out in their Car of the Year 2008 bit [Caterham R500], Sevens are geeky cars, and they'd never own one. Me? I'm simply not cool enough[*] to pull off a Cobra. I could rock a Seven of some sort, though.

[*] Or middle-aged enough.)

EDIT: One further note: I have seen three, and they are my Eleanor. That count is accurate, I can picture all three of them as clearly as the day I saw them. If you want google maps links, I can pinpoint where I saw all three of them.

• P161911 says:

I probably see 6-10 Cobra kit cars a year on the road. Maybe more if you count the ones at car shows, which are often the same ones year after year. I wouldn't mind doing one, but I would want something other than the "normal" Ford or Chevy V-8 in it. Also I would want a 289 version, not the super fat fendered 427 version. Maybe put a BMW S54 I-6 in one and badge it as an AC with some special Bristol engine covers.

• Van_Sarockin says:

I like the way you think.

• jeepjeff says:

I wouldn't count show cars, just because there is a self-selection bias there. 6-10 still isn't all that common.

I'm with Van_Sarockin, I like the way you think. There was at least one guy on ffcars who floated the idea of dropping a 2JZ into an FFR. It got poo-pooed by a bunch of idiots on the board (heavy bias toward 'Murican V8s over there), but that doesn't mean it isn't a great idea. Also, the 289 is an underloved engine. Under car exhaust also looks amazing and clean on those cars.

• P161911 says:

The kit cars are one of those things I take note of, but they are probably about as common a V-8 Ferraris in general where I live, north of Atlanta, GA. I see several, probably several a month in the warmer months. But since I have moved to this area (I live in a normal neighborhood, so it is the poor side of the tracks for a very rich county) I have seen some really interesting cars on the road here is a partial list:
Lamborghini Murcilagao
Lancia Aurlia convertible
Jaguar XK120
several "big" Austin-Healeys
Ford GTs
1958 Corvette
Noble
MG T-series
Newer Ferrari V-8s, Lambos,Lotus, and Aston Martins are a weekly sight.
Lots of classic American Muscle comes out in the nice weather too.

• jeepjeff says:

IIRC, GA and AL have very liberal registration laws, so it is much easier to get kits on the road than other places in the country.

That is a nice list of vehicles, there's a few on there that I have yet to see in the Bay Area. (I'd love to see an XK120 on the road. That would be awesome.)
