Question of the Weekend – What Designer Edition Can You Think Of?

Last posting for this Designer Edition Weekend, and I thought I would ask the Hooniverse Audience what Designer Edition can you think of? Right away, I can think of the Designer Editions of the Lincoln Continantal Mark V, the most successful of the line. Lincoln used to sell at least 75,000 of the large 2-door coupes a year, with acres of plasti-wood, and yards of vinyl and leather (don’t forget about Velour!).

Some of the Designer Editions of the Mark IV and Mark V include the Bill Blass Edition, The Emelio Pucci Edition, The Givenchy Edition, and the Cartier Edition. They all had special features, from their own paint finish, special vinyl roof treatments, interiors finished in coordinating colors, finished off with the Designers Nameplate in Gold in the Opera Windows. The Cartier Edition was probably themost subtle, finished in triple Grey.

Designers seem to range from High Fashion, to Sportswear, to Blue Jeans, so dazzle me with your brilliance. Also tell me which Designer Edition attracts you, and which one repulses you?

Eddie Bauer Ford trucks, and LL Bean edition Subarus. I can't believe you guys skipped over these; they're pretty ubiquitous designer brand cars.

• Devin says:

Isn't that a pretty good reason to skip over them? I see an Eddie Bauer Explorer or two every day, don't see a Fila T-Bird though.

• P161911 says:

I actually had an Eddie Bauer Bronco for a while. It had even been owned by some second string pro baseball player, which added about $0.25 to the resale value.

Jeep Cherokee Orvis edition.

Harley Davidson Ford trucks. At this point, HD is more of a fashion designer than a motorcycle maker.

• M44Power says:

They also have a trim package on heavy trucks (transfer/tractor-trailer/18-wheeler). Take a look at the International Lonestar HD.

5. Mr. Tactful says:

The top picture is a Bill Blass Mark VI, not a V. The VI is much less common anyhow, and much less loved.

Also, the Nike edition Bombardier CRJ-700:

Why, the Frank Sinatra Edition of the Imperial, of course…!

The 2008 Mercury Mariner VOGA Edition.

The Mercury VOGA has Moss Green metallic paint, special chrome highlighting the grille, rear fascia trim and unique VOGA badging which is also on the 17-inch wheels.

The Mariner VOGA's distinctive style carries through to the interior, as well. A charcoal black environment surrounds the plush, unique VOGA-embroidered Cashmere leather seats, which are trimmed with contrast Ash stitching to match the exterior color. Charcoal black floor mats are embroidered with the VOGA label, reinforcing the personalized feel.

The focal point of the interior is the striking Tarragon metallic instrument panel covered in a unique paint. The subtle silver-green metallic spans across the center console and door switch plates as well. All of these extra touches provide Mercury customers with the look and feel of a personalized vehicle customized to suit their tastes.

Oh, yeah……..The Chief Designer of this vehicle was none other than Camilo Pardo, who was also Chief Designer of the Ford GT.

The Oleg Cassini AMC Matador.

Cadillac Eldorado-based Pierre Cardin Evolution. Aside from the revised nose and tail, the interior was redone with hand-sewn leather, wool carpets, a refrigerator, a bar, a color TV and a VCR. Original price in the early '80s? About $63,000.

Thanks to Rusty, I know there was a Ford Explorer North Face. I want to say there was something similar with Columbia Sportswear for the GMC Jimmy (or it might've been the Blazer – they both got a couple of those special editions, although it might've been more at the dealer level).

The 1970 Pauline Trigere (a clothing designer) edition of the Mercury Cougar. I couldn't find any really clear pictures, but apparently it featured a lot of houndstooth check:
<img src="http://www.theclassiccougarnetwork.com/tccn3/history/timeline/history1970/history1970_image08.png">

Ad photo and the following text from http://www.theclassiccougarpages.com:
"Another interesting 1970 option is the spring special package. Typically, L-M offered up a special option package to boost post-winter sales. For 1970 the spring special was known as the Houndstooth Cougar. Optionally available only on standard hardtops, the Houndstooth package consisted of a vinyl top and seat upholstery inserts in a checked pattern inspired by popular fashion designer Pauline Trigere. The Houndstooth pattern could be ordered in brown and black, depending on the car's paint color."

I see I shouldn't have jumped the gun in mentioning the Austin Metro "Principles" edition yesterday:

The only reasonable solution is to mention the Austin Metro "Principles" edition again today:

The original idea for the Smart came from the CEO of the company that makes Swatch.

• navelboxaren says:

Well, it is possible to drive one from point A to point B if the distance isn't too long. Just like Swatch watch tells you what time it is. Can't think of anything other to say about either, really.

In the 80s European special editions were very often completely white with a sunroof.
As you can see the 205 Lacoste is a perfect example of this 80s trend.
The Lacoste also featured central locking and electric windows.
Those items were pretty unusual in small cars back then.

The Simca Matra Bagheera Courrèges, white special edition.

<img src="http://aebergon.perso.neuf.fr/photos_Talbot/Bagheera_Courrege_int2_T.jpg">
It had a tan coloured leather interior. Nice!

Last but not least, the Autobianchi Y10 Fila…
The little Italian was also known as the Lancia Y10.

• Slow Joe Crow says:

I'm surprised you guys missed the Mercury Villager Nautica Special Edition, they were almost as common as LL Bean Subarus.

• AteUpWithMotor says:

How about the Ford Capri S "Midnight" edition, circa 1975? Black with gold trim outside, black cloth upholstery with gold seat inserts.

• Randy Stern says:

My father had the Oleg Cassini AMC Matador coupe. It was a symphony of tan…tan-on-tan. And those gawdawful faux brass buttons that were too grandiose for some people's tastes. After all, his previous leased car was a Ford LTD Country Squire – right for a divorced father who left mom and the two kids…
