This is what we’re driving to the 2011 LA Auto Show

Hotchkis was kind enough to flip us the keys to their 1970 Dodge Challenger. Under the hood sits a 340 six-pack (5.6-liter) V8 engine, which is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The power goes to the rear wheels, the black and yellow paint scheme goes directly to your eyes, and the noises plunge themselves into the deepest corners of your soul.

This is modified American muscle that’s been given the full Hotchkis treatment. The Hotchkis crew built this car with autocrossing in mind, which means it can handle twists and turns better than most modern vehicles… nevermind one that’s over 40 years old.

We’ll snap some pictures, grab a bit of video, and write up what it’s like to drive this yellow rockstar after we get back from the LA Auto Show. Until then, we’re going to use it to shuttle ourselves to and from the auto show with a bit more style than the rest of the folks making the trek to the West Coast.

Since you mentioned autocross, I am contractually obligated to ask what class they built it for? It sounds like it'd fitin SM but I doubt it'd be competitive without a full aero package.

    So jelly…

Especially considering my already existing desires for classic muscle that handles, recently refreshed by a trip to the Good Guys car show this last weekend. They had a small autocross course setup, and I got to watch a bunch of modded muscle get flogged around, including Mary Pozzi in her Camaro, and a couple of the Maier Mustangs…

  11. Vendor class? does that make sense?

  12. Van Sarockin says:

I hope they're slipping you a gas card to go with that PMY beast. Have fun and please do many things that I wouldn't do.

  13. engineerd says:

Not quite as cool as the Wullet, or the KillerBee. It'll do, though. It'll do.

  14. pj134 says:

    White and teal stripes SUCKA!

  15. tonyola says:

Big points for using a hot 340 instead of the usual Barrett-Jackson wet-dream 440 or 426.

  16. Charles_Barrett says:

    Holy Cow…!
Who'd you have to sleep with (or whatever) to get the keys to this beautiful Mopar marvel…? You're definitely gonna hit the L.A. Convention Center in style.

  17. njhoon says:

Awesome. Who did you Sandusky to get that?
    .
    .
    .
    What?
    Too soon?

  18. Tomsk says:

Jeff shall henceforth be known as Gluckwolski.

  19. Tomsk says:

Jeff shall henceforth (or at least tomorrow and Thursday) be known as Gluckwolski.

  20. MrHowser says:

    Yeah… too soon.

  21. I laughed… even if it was fucked up.

I am of the "joke about everything or nothing" school of thought though… which isn't always correct.

  22. For all we know, that could be my great-great-grandfather's name…

  23. You should HEAR how loud this thing is… and I have to fire it up tomorrow morning around 3am.

Rejoice ye neighbors, for your ears do not deceive you!

  24. I've only had the car for a bit today… and I am nearing a half a tank.

  25. What happened to the minivan?

  26. Van Sarockin says:

    And post the pics!

  27. Alcology says:

That's awesome! I kept getting called Sandusky because of my mustache all weekend. Did you see the comment he made? “In retrospect, I shouldn’t have showered with those kids.” Amazing

  28. OA5599 says:

I highly approve, though I do wonder why the image above is reversed. Objects in this mirror are not Kowalski; you are in his rearview mirror.

  29. mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

You can't see it over there, but I'm smiling again here right now!

  30. OA5599 says:

It's set up for autocross, so the lighter engine makes more sense. Also, this car is done up as a T/A clone, and a 340-six pack was the only available engine in the street versions (competition versions were de-stroked to 305 CID to fit the specifications of the day).

Besides, Hooniverse is taking this car to the LA show, so why not show up with an LA?

  31. It's a shame my complementary airline tickets and press pass haven't arrived yet. I guess our postal service just isn't as it used to be.

  32. pj134 says:

Amen, there is no such thing as too soon. If you're going to say it ever, say it. There should be no more or less impact based on when it was said.

  33. $kaycog says:

Thumbs up from me, and you're going to get plenty along the way!!!! Awesome!

  34. Lotte says:

    Jaw…floor…drool…

  35. Lotte says:

How fantastic it would be if you snagged the 392 you did a review on way back when…

  36. TurboBrick says:

Excellent choice! Autocross setup, reasonable tires, 340 motor… this one checks all the boxes.

  37. rpdred6 says:

    jaw drops, beautiful car

  38. Daniel Sanchez says:

    This Hotchkis is awsome! I just dont like the BBS type wheels;
