I'm a sysadmin for a Bay Area startup. I'm pretty on board with site maintenance and software upgrades. I can see the logo again. (I'm only messing about because a certain other site would have taken three or four weeks to get the logo working again…)

In other words, I should sell the VP of Engineering and the CTO on post-modern web design and see what happens when we IPO with an error-message centric design ethos? Too bad it isn't 1999, we'd make a killing.

  20. jeepjeff says:

"This is you!" is the most helpful. I can never remember what I wrote. This is good, because being able to follow yourself would obviously create a paradox that would spawn microscopic black holes and destroy the planet, dooming the whole human race and leaving no trace of the solar system we once resided in.

Archaeologists from Alien civilizations would never have the opportunity to know about Lincoln Continentals, NSU Ro 80s and V8 swapped Miatas.

What the hell has happened to this site??? "News," car reviews, mainstream motorsports happenings? It's been happening slowly, now the redesign that makes it look like something a 25 year old woman reads on her iPad while on the treadmill as she seeks fashion and beauty tips.

I started coming here for a slice of the automotive fringe (your term). You've now turned it into Jalopnik II. Was the site purchased by some huge media conglomorate or something? Let me guess…consultants are involved.

    Ugh.

Besides, at that point, I normally want to refresh to see what other comments have been made in the meantime before I post.

  93. west_coaster says:

    Noooooo

Ooh, new fonts and colours. By any chance you guys were testing this on CarGuyDad in the last week or so? I wandered over there and was surprised to see this updated Hoon logo. I kinda liked the rendering of the previous logo better along with the tagline, and I'm also missing the "blogroll" on the side (which is my own fault for not bothering to bookmark, but that's the only way I reach Murilee, Roadwork, and whatever else that strikes my fancy.)

Otherwise, it's fine. Just okay. This'll do.

  98. mr. mzs zsm msz esq says:

I like, thanks, for example the gray on the left lets me see more easily where threads begin. Something changed about that maybe two weeks ago. One thing I miss is the list of other blogs on the right of the homepage. I would click from there from time to time.

  99. Scandinavian Flick says:

I really used to like and respect the guy, but his narcissistic, self-centered, careless crap is killing the site. He is clearly desperate for a breaking story such as the Gizmodo debacle that needs not be named. The problem is, when you beat it to death and grab at straws, it kills the scoop. If you have to resort to anonymous forum posts to "prove" that something is real, you have nothing.

Whatever. It just proves I made the right decision. No love loss on my part.

  100. Scandinavian Flick says:

You do realize that all those tags already existed, right? They already had "news" and "car reviews". All they did here is clean it up a bit and make it easier to find what you are looking for. The content has been the same, and I have faith it will remain the same. This isn't anywhere near the [Redacted] 5.0 crap. This actually works, and makes improvements where it was needed.

My "change is scary" was mostly sarcasm aimed at humor mixed with some natural apprehension that came from past experience. I like the updates, and the fact that it works in an overnight redesign is very satisfying.

This comment is too long to be replied to.

  112. Lotte says:

    Mystery Car?

  113. Manic_King says:

I agree with you, partly. CGD merger has somewhat diluted previous vibe which was more "see this old obscure weirdness I found in a long dead corner of an automotive landscape" mixed with grass root level car guy stuff. So perfect.
Same time, maybe Hooniverse needed some new blood, I read the stories couple of weeks ago which were published, some days more some days less of them and thought: oh sh*t what a disaster would it be if Hooniverse makers will run out of will (ideas, time) to run this site properly. But yeah, now there's more posts but it's less fringe now. I don't like Nürburgring fanboi stuff and half baked Youtube videos much, hopefully site will not go there.
As for new design, I like it, more modern and better looking.

I remember the "H" but that vanished a long time ago.

  136. You know why the fringy grassroots non-corporate stuff is in decline?

Because I'm fnucking busy working on my cars and my house. Hardwood floor installs suck, for the record.

That's what happens when you have a site run by amateurs, real life gets in the way. I, personally, have a bunch of posts in draft form that are just waiting for when things calm down at the day job or when I finally finish this damn floor.

The thing is, it was already in decline for most of this summer. We were down to like 3 posts/day a lot of the time. The site was shriveling on the vine. Kamil and I randomly started emailing talking about cars (which was basically the origins of Hooniverse) and we decided we'd be better off with our two small sites as one.

I can assure you, no one's lining their pockets off of all of this activity…more like assuring the site can pay its own bills, and maybe invest to do some cool projects or events. LeMons, project cars, etc.

  137. Besides, it was never the purpose of this site to be nothing but old and crappy cars…more like a kickass mix of old and crappy cars with "everyman" commentary on new stuff. I'll readily admit that my long-standing benchmark is Jalopnik circa 2007, when it was Spinelli, Johnson, Lieberman, Mike Austin, and others. (To be clear, I like Murilee, Matt and Ben, too)

In case it's not obvious, this is a work in progress. We're definitely in a transition right now, and it's more like CGD crashed into Hooniverse than any particularly well planned merger. The goal is to get the pieces in place now and really have our shit together early next year.

  138. Working on fixing that.

New theme is very "Apple": slick and pretty, some simple options, but there's some stuff that's nearly impossible to change.

I have to make that change in raw code rather than an options setting…so it'll be a little bit.

  152. pj134 says:

As long as everything works while you're doing it, who could really complain? This site has always been people who just wanted something that wasn't offered elsewhere while still being employed full time.

  153. Agreed.

And don't think we're not listening.

  154. We most certainly do.

Cranking stuff out day-to-day can be training on the creative juices (hmmm…might need to re-word that…), but there are a lot of people who have like 2 really great writeups per year in them. We love those people and would be honored to run their work.

Yes they run auto reviews. But instead of regurgitated press releases, they actually drive the cars and give us input from a like mind. Jeff's stuff isn't always great (Lexus Hybrid recent review) but more often than not, they do a great job (Hi-Po SUV review).

I've enjoyed the infusion of new blood but don't always get a chance to review EVERY post on EVERY day anymore :(

But most importantly, the admins LISTEN to their commenters and encourage constructive criticism.

that's the best way I've found to do it until the fix.

  224. If you have a browser that can tab, scan the top page and open interesting articles in new tabs. It's how I'm surviving.

  225. I approve this message.

My 2 cents…. not really fond of the new layout, but hey, it's your site, so you get to do what you want. Be nice if you brought back the 'Next – Previous' links at the top of each article. Oh, and the 'Staking a claim' tagline. I come here to read articles about strange/unusual cars not another article about whatever is the flavor of the month in new cars. Just how many articles does the internet need on "The NEW 2012 _____________!!!!" I've read enough reports on new Camaros, Jeeps, etc to know what they are, and don't care to get article 1,001 rehashing what's already been said. It's looking like you're morphing into just another run of the mill car site. Hey, if that's where the $$ is, good luck to you (sincerely). Just saddened to see another sheep join the herd.

Don't say we're not listening (at least as regards the layout). Just fixed a ton of stuff…

    Next/Previous navigation is back
Better front-page clicking into the post is back
Links are a different color text (for now…blue looks kinda dumb, but they highlight on mouse-over)
    No double comments box

Not seeing the Next/Previous links. Firefox 88bazillion.02 Do I need to refresh?

Glad to see the old flaked chrome logo back.
Not particularly fond of the new layout/color scheme, but I'll get used to it. Heck, I eventually got used to Oldlongroof's writing style just in time for him to disappear.
Understand that you guys actually have lives and bills to pay, so I'm glad to see some new regulars posting, even if they're not the 'ideal' Hooniverse subject matter.

      • Yeah, noticed they're not all loading on all pages.

It's a caching issue…basically we serve a static, older version or pages for anything that's not brand new, so posts from the last coulple days might not work. Should work on new stuff as the day progresses. If not, I'm back into the code tonight.

Longroof's still around, just busy with life like the rest of us.

Funny thing is, the layout's not really that different. Everything's basically where it was, and the color scheme's still basically grayscale.

Flaked chrome? I always assumed the logo was supposed to look like weathered cadmium plating.

Yeah, Ray has his faults but he's not solely to blame. He's kind of caught in the middle between the evil Gawker overlords and the rabid commentariat and is trying to keep both sides happy.

I should have thought of that! That's how I get around on "E! Online's" website (I love celebrity gossip) ever since THEY "improved" their website a couple years back. Thanks!
