Having spent much of his life riding two wheelers, Henri had no problem figuring out how to best protect his newly purchased Renault R12 from theft.

Are you sure that's not a Dacia? If so, maybe the chain is there to protect the post from theft.
Damn, I came in here to make a joke about protecting the chain from theft by attaching a the car to it.
I guess I have to be satisfied with thumbing yours.
Damn, I came here to say that this is probably a Dacia!
Yes cause, even in France, even in the 70's, having 3 R12 in the same pic would have been very very unlikely.
Damn, I came here to respond to my reply…
…wait…
Back when I lived in a questionable neighborhood in SLC, I always locked a Club to the steering wheel of my F100. However, that didn't prevent the local a**holes from stealing my battery. Sumbitches also wrecked the factory battery hold-down bracket. If you're gonna rip me off, at least show a little bit of class and respect and not ruin what you did not steal.
I'm so glad I don't live in the ghetto anymore.
Years ago, I had a battery stolen from my '68 Bonneville. I came out of a party at one apartment complex (I had parked across the street in another one). It wasn't well-lit (but okay, I was half-lit), and when I unlocked the door, I noticed, "Hey, no dome light". Then saw the hood open, but not latched. I had to borrow a battery to get home. The next day when I went to buy one, I bought some chain and a padlock. I pulled the battery tray out, ran the chain under the tray, reinstalled it, and locked the battery down with the chain and padlock.
Just found this googlin' around:

Please be so!
It is so. But as far as I know, only in Europe. I remember seeing some pictures of a USDM version of it compared to the EDM (It's a set with two red wagons, if anyone knows where that's from), mostly bumper differences, but I don't think they ever made it stateside.
Can't find it, but here's a pic of what the US version might've looked like, note the recessed tailgate, probably to pass insurance low-speed test crashing:

Ahh, I was thinking it looked like a well finished photoshop job or possible concept but that makes sense.
Taking his glass, wheels and door locks with him also seems to be part of the security strategy.
"Don't you authorities be removing my parts car from the public street!"
One man's junk is another man's treasure.
