No Power for Jim-More Power for You: CONTEST – What’s your best time around the Nurburgring?
This weekend the theme revolves around the fact that our own Jim Brennan sits powerless due to an early New England storm. Rather than make you suffer without power as well, we’re going in the other direction. This weekend is all about LOTS of power.
Those of us who did not win any cool contests lately may still be playing GT5. My questions is:
What’s your best time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife?
Use any car, any mods, any tires, one full lap, open track. Show us a screen-shot of your completed lap with a piece of paper that says “Hooniverse” on it. Embed the picture into the comments by 8pm EST/5pm PST Sunday. The fastest time will get… umm… hmm… let’s see… what do I have laying around here…
a 1GB memory stick that’s shaped like a Nissan key!!!

Red Bull X2010 and X2011 are allowed? Both of those cars can do a lap in about 3 minutes… this will be very interesting.
Sounds like the plan.
Yes. In the end you'll need some skills to get it there in 3 minutes.
Awesome. I'm fast with every car EXCEPT that Red Bulls lol. I hate that thing so much
I just pulled an impressive 6:10 in the X2011. Shoot me.
Really? The kid made it under 6 minutes w/ the X2011. I didn't think it pic worthy!
SH-T! He did it 4:58!

A young child is making me feel inadequate.
Nice!!
Challenge accepted.
If that's a clean lap(numbers look white at least) then i would say that this is better than my 4:49, which was most certainly not a clean lap. My racing car driver excuse is that i just got home from work a few hours ago, had to download and install almost 1,5Gb worth of updates on the console and then had about an hour to practice and do the lap. It also past 3AM right now.
This also reminded me about why i rarely play on the PS3, the UI is about as intuitive as the Symbian phone i used to search the web for instructions on how to change my billing details on the PS3 so i can download the update with these red bulls..
He cut the grass a few times on that lap so no, it wasn't clean. I was still impressed with his driving though. That was his second lap, the first time he spun but still managed a 6 minute lap. I told him wrong on his final gearing so the car was bogging down in 7th on the straightaway and never got to top speed. I told him to change it, run another lap… NOPE. That car wore him out so that was it.
The youngster did very well (much better than I ever could) but there was one faster time. However, because of his efforts and great success there is consolation prize. Email me your snail-mail address to kamilAThoonivereDOTcom.
My ISF concept racer is cooler, because I went chrome with it.
Daughter is charge of colors, did you see the Ferrari 458?
Just painted it white.
GT5 has been the only reason for me to get a PS3. Now it's GT5 and that Nissan memory stick!!
Not a console gamer, but thought I'd enter a lap from a different game for the lulz. It has not gone well.

What do I win if I'm playing Arkham City?
Who?
I'm not sure what you win; however Kamil seems to be hinting that it is WHO not WHAT…….
also, arkham city is beautiful and fun….. enjoy
After accepting your challenge, I remembered why I haven't played much Forza3 lately – my left thumbstick is all jacked up, making steering a very tricky business. I'm struggling to get the Peugeot TDI LMP car around in much less than 7:00.
A clean 9:54 in a bone-stock Ferrari 250 California. What's that about slow-car-fast that we say around here?
Nice! But not good enough… power was the theme.
so much german…

alright, I think I'm done for now…

A for effort. Sorry.
DeLorean shooting-break?
My wife used to think it was incredibly odd that I would want to spend my spare time driving on a video game after I had just spent 12-15 hours doing it in real life. The greatest thing about the video games was that you were allowed to stop right there in traffic, back up with impunity and go check out what's down that alley- things you were absolutely forbidden to do at work.

EST is -7 hours from where i am so i still have about 4 hours left when i get off work.
tick tock, tick tock, tick tock,…
This was with the 2011 red bull thing. Could not concentrate anymore so had to stop, this was the best result(lap 8, 4:49) i managed trying to just get a clean lap and failing miserably..

Well, I don't have one of those new fangled Playstation 3. In the good old days (about two years ago), I wrote the firmware for the Logitech steering wheels for Gran Turismo 3 and 4. I would test them at my desk by driving around the 'Ring. The setup was usually far from ideal, with the wheel not quite put together, various probes and debug cables coming out of it and the whole setup located about 90 degree out of alignment from a 12" tube TV.
Under those circumstances, I managed lap times of anywhere between 15 minutes and an entire weekend (I would
forget to turn it off on Fridaylet the whole setup running, with the car stuck against a wall to make sure the force feedback system would survive). With somewhat better setups, I have managed to come down to 11 minutes. The type of car I used did not appear to have material effect on my lap times…So yes, some people, in real life, are faster than me, in a van.
You should win this contest just by virtue of your awesome post…!
I especially like leaving the car stuck against the wall to "torture test" the force-feedback — whether it was intentional or not.
Spoken like a true engineer…!
Damn, I only just now saw this… I have a high 3 minute record on the 'ring in the X2010, but I'm heading out to a BBQ and won't be back until well after the contest is over
I remember running 7's in a tuned E30 on Forza 3. Me and my friend would ONLY race the ring' against each other. It usually ended with us both driving cars that would barely move under their own power
I have not yet played the newest Forza… will you accept a Forza 3 lap?
I guess so. I'll be more specific next time.
I found this cool picture of the ring while on a tumblr bender the other day

Looks more like a map of Middle Earth.
One ring to rule them all…
I graduated through GTs 1, 2, 3 and 4, eventually upgrading to 5 on its launch day last year. Inevitably I've hardly played it, due to my having to make (misguided) concessions towards adulthood etc.
In the various GTs I built up quite an army of stuff in the various garages. I had a white and blue GT40 that was 650hp strong and impossible to spin- it earned me millions of credits in endurance racing. I had a Toyota Chaser that was tuned and geared impossibly badly, it was all but undriveable but absolutely hilarious. I had a Mitsubishi GTO with seemingly elastic gearing that gave me 430kph on the high-speed ring.
But best of all was my RS200. Well, I had two; the Ford Group B rally car and a "plainclothes" one. The latter was theone that I threw the tuning credits at. I can't recollect the power, but I accidentally created the best handling, fastest car I ever had on any GT.
It gave me a 6'26" 'Ring time, GT4, PS2. Unfortunately my PS2 is gathering dust somewhere, so I can't do a screenshot and y'all can suck my socks.
Adulthood sucks. I remember the first time my friend and I were playing GT1… all night.
What does it count if I did an actual, physical 7:52 BTG in my E36 M3 today? Weather over here's been great the last few weekends.
It's absolutly meaningless!!!! Ha!
Kidding, that soulds awesome. Congrats. Perhaps our next contest will involve actually driving the car on the N'ring and the prize will be a key to a real car?
This reminded me of some weirdness last year… I had some time to kill at work and was plotting a Nurburgring-like track in google maps. It was based on the roads I learned to drive on and was a test track for the MGB I autoxed. It turned out to be about 13 miles thru the Appalachian foothills. It was bitchin'.
So the next Friday I pick bud up from his mom's house and the first thing he said was "Hey dad- I had a dream we were at granddad's house and we were racing the Nurburgring!"
I never said anything to him about my track, or reference the 'ring at my dad's house. That is the truth.
Now we need to do this again, only this time with a stock Citroën 2CV. Or with a fully tuned one, it wont really make a huge difference…
