Hooniverse Asks- What Would be the Greatest Engine-Car Combination Ever?

Consider the willowy but perfectly proportioned AC Ace, and the athletic but compact Ford small block, seemingly two pieces of a common puzzle. The merger of Ford V8 thumper and British aluminum and stiff upper lip roller created not only the Shelby Cobra, but at the same time a legend of mythical proportions. Former race driver, and future somebody-else’s-heart recipient, Carroll Shelby was the responsible party – creating what was at the time the greatest mating since Jack Kennedy knocked boots with Marilyn Monroe. And he did it despite the hardship of having a girl’s name.

The Cobra was far from the first engine/chassis marriage, precedent Allards and others having the better part of a decade’s headstart, but Shelby’s snake remains the most worshiped even to this day. Other car-motor pairings have happened since, some more successful than others. But one thing’s for sure, finding a light-weight and sporting body, and wedging inside a rabid wolverine of a motor is almost always a recipe for mirth.

If you just so happened to want to emulate Shelby today – or Sydney Allard, or even Briggs Cunningham (no relation to Richie), then you’d very likely have to pick both a relocation-worthy engine, as well as a viable recipient that won’t immediately reject the transplant. Considering all the cars and engines that have come and gone, what do you think would make the best options for both of those elements today? What would make for the ultimate engine-car combo?

Not exactly in the spirit of things, but I want a JK Jeep with a Cummins.

    • ptschett says:

I just have to be a buzzkillask… which Cummins? Something from the ISF family could make good sense, but the ISB 6-cylinder weighs half a tonne and is a tight squeeze even in the Ram.

I'm shopping for an E30 M3 right now and I'm a little disturbed by the amount of M50/S50/S52 swaps into that chassis that seem to be popping up. It's a real shame IMO and makes the car just a lil' less special.

      • pj134 says:

        … People do that?

I mean, you can buy the flares and stick them on a 318 coupe and do whatever the hell you want with it but an E30 M3 should have the S14 and nothing else.

        • lbreevesii says:

as much as I like the S14, and respect the E30 M3, I still think i would be perfectly happy to drop an S54 into one and use the S14 as a coffee table for a while. I wouldn't even consider selling the S14 of course.

Oh well, guess i'll be happy with my built S50 powered 318is.

OMG I've really been thinking about swapping a KL V6 into my P5. What a glorious little engine. My mom had a 626 V6 with the KL. What a melodious howl. Such smooth power delivery. Brilliant! Brilliant, I say!

But then I consider the fact that I can throw a turbo kit on the car and get similar horsepower figures, I rethink things.

    • sport_wagon says:

Also, I believe the KL is lighter than the S-DE.

Tell me that's a LeMons car.

It's so awesome, but I can't see how it would be any kind of good DD.

EDIT: The related videos answered my question. That is truly an amazing swap.

    • pj134 says:

Why? I don't think anything is an abomination if you have fun doing it, plus that engine up top is easily capable of very high horsepower…

Unless of course your afraid of being mobbed by flat brim hat to the side kids and hipsters but you can shoo them away with a good power slide.

      • PowerTryp says:

If it was done by some shop looking to do something different and cool then I'd be fine with it but because it was a Hollywood idea that was only used for the still shots. While the car may drive they still used V8 powered ones for the drift scenes.

  • facelvega says:

The guys over at small car performance will, today, build you an SVX-engined Vanagon, their approximation of what a Porsche boxer-engined Vanagon would have looked like. Preposterous and awesome, and way better and more reliable than a stock Vanagon.

    <a href="http://www.smallcar.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=27” target=”_blank”>http://www.smallcar.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=27

    • themagicboltbox says:

Which really speaks to the reliability of Vanagons if the SVX drivetrain is MORE reliable.

      • facelvega says:

that's the beauty of it, they don't use the SVX's doomed transmission, it's a manual with custom bellhousing and clutch plate. It might be worth it swapping a VW manual into a dying SVX with the same stuff, come to think of it, though I don't know where the shifter would end up.

    • Paul_y says:

I've seen these before. They'll also do EJ20s and EJ25s, both NA and turbo'ed– I'd think the turbo flat 4s would be better, simply by virtue of being a bit more modern and upgradeable (and, well, new- the SVX hasn't been around in a while).

      • facelvega says:

That would be more practical, sure, but hardly greatest-combo-ever material. The SVX engine is bonkers, it's bonkers to think of it just because it matches what a Porsche vanagon might have done, and it's bonkers that they can actually make it fit, build all the necessary parts, and put them on the road. You can put a WRX engine into anything, but who would even bother with an SVX engine? In other words, greatness.

    • pj134 says:

I wish those things weren't so stupidly expensive…

    With this? http://worldcarsdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/201
Even though I can't fit in a Miata this is the right answer.

  • The 289 (or 260!) Cobras are my favorite, as they still capture the "you put a what in a what?" spirit, rather than the 428's "let's build a car around a motor".

Probably closest to that in today's world would be the LS powered Hennessey Venom GT, based on the Lotus Exige. Similarly mind-blowing performance. To be honest, I'd prefer a non-turbo version with just the 400-something horse LS3. 0-200mph competitions aren't really my thing.

    Other options:
    180hp, 400lb-ft 4-pot version of the B6.7 (B4.6?) Cummins in a Wrangler
Juiced TDI motor in a Boxter/Cayman Chassis (Get to it, VW)
    Rotary Se7en
    Rotary Miata
    H1 V8-powered Atom/Se7en/X-bow

GM LS6 V8 into Mazda RX-7 FD. They weigh within 100 lbs of each other and it replaces the one bad element of the FD with something better. While a twin turbo rotary may be an awesome idea on paper, Mazda's execution was terrible. Had they used mass air EFI things may have been different but the speed density system they used was so exacting that it could not cope with so much as an air filter that deviated from stock. The LSX is one of today's great engines with exceptional reliability and a good power to weight ratio that makes the combination a natural.

I dont know if this counts but it makes great use of a Chevrolet sourced V-8

    • Guh…Local Motors builds a great custom offroad buggy, for sure, but they definitely over-market and over hype the crowd-sourced, owner-built, etc etc aspect of what's basically a high-end custom buggy, just like 8 dozen other shops all over the southwest build.

      Seriously sweet truck, though.

      • suju89 says:

While this is just another custom buggy, the crowd-sourced, owner-built process is much more than this. It is a model of manufacturing where large car companies could manufacture low-volume, niche products without breaking the bank. It is this new way of thinking, along with Gordon Murray's iStream that is the future for enthusiast automobiles.

        • yellofury says:

Good points both.. I personally would think it would be pretty cool to take my kid to wrench with me for 2 days and then take her to go sand buggying afterwards knowing we both had some small part in it.

After a bit of maths, it's looking totally possible to shoehorn a W8 into the Corrado. It will have to be RWD, but the chassis was designed for the Quattro system anyhow, and there have been a few dozen well-documented conversions of the Corrado platform from transverse to longitudinal. If we stumble across the requisite pieces, we may just experiment with this in the next few years. Will it be the greatest combination? Probably not… but it would be fun!

    • Syrax says:

Was there anything wrong with the W8? I mean, nothing was wrong with the car except the price. But why kill the engine? Too much money spent on a single model? V6 making more power?

  • Jim-Bob says:

Honda B16 VTEC 4 + Austin Mini=Awesome! Imagine the combination of acceleration and fuel economy you would get with this thing. Plus, it is a popular enough swap that you can get a taller ring and pinion for the transmission so that it works well with standard Mini wheel heights. It's even available as a bolt in as several companies offer kits with mounts, subframes and axles.

Once upon a time I thought it possible to shoehorn a Mazda rotary into a Fiat X 1/9. It would have resulted in about 8 lbs/hp, with a little left over. I still like the idea.
