Hooniverse Truck Thursday: A Couple Oldies Spotted In The Wild

Dateline Denver, Colorado: August 18, 2011

Well my fellow Hoons, this olelongrooffan is still out here in Ms. Martin’s hometown and trying to keep from usurping his cool ass old cars and trucks and posting them here in the Hooniverse.

Of course, I am failing miserably both here and on my personal blog. However, on this Hooniverse Truck Thursday, I have to post a couple old trucks that I thought were pretty cool and both have a tangental relation to this olelongrooffan.

First up is this sweet Twin I Beam possessing mid 60′s (65?) Ford F-250. Now this one is especially sweet as it

has the long stepside bed with the side mounted spare tire. Yeah, this is definitely a work truck as every single body panel has a nonfactory crease in it.

The connection this old FOMOCO product has to this olelongrooffan? One of my older brothers, affectionately known as thehorsefarmer, had a 65 F-150 back in the early 70′s although his was a standard eight foot bed, full chrome wheel covers and was garnished in hunter green.

This work horse is most likely not a city slicker’s truck although I did spot it near downtown Denver just a few hours ago. I especially love the four on the floor and the aftermarket 8 track tape player skillfully mounted in the original radio’s location.

The other cool old truck is this CAMPER special as offered by Dodge on its Sweptside series of pick up trucks. It should not be confused with the Camper Special as offered by Ford during the early 70′s though.

No, this late 60′s Dodge product had no body modifications, other than the wider mirrors, to confirm its status as a CAMPER special although it may possess some chassis mods to accommodate a heavier than normal payload.

Based on the interior bits on this one, I would suspect it could have been a top of the line model as it has lots of chrome bits and pieces, vinyl door inserts, full horn ring and a dash mounted automatic transmission.

And the connection with fender wrapped Sweptside has to this olelongrooffan? Well my fellow Hoons may remember this is of a similar style to the old Sweptside we had out on the farm as I shared with my fellow Hoons many Hoon moons ago.

Yeah, even though I spotted a similar era Dodge stake truck as the Ford Mr. Brennan commented on earlier today, I just couldn’t bring myself to do yet another post showcasing a similar truck so I hope these will help supplement your truck hoonage needs this Hooniverse Truck Thursday.

Needless to say, they do satisfy mine.

The Dodge truck is somewhere in the mid-1965 to 1967 range. These were the years that Dodge reverted back from quad to dual headlights and used the dinner-plate headlight rims.

IIRC, all the Camper Special trucks had a long bed and a longer wheelbase. The idea was not only to accommodate a larger slide-in camper unit, but also to get more of the camper's weight ahead of the rear wheels, rather than behind them. I recall when slide-in campers first became popular, there were safety and handling problems from cramming a big camper onto a short wheelbase truck.

The Ford is a '66, like my F100. Nice truck, too. I like the Dodge, as well. My guess is that it's a heavy three quarter ton, with overload springs and a heavier rear end. I like the looks of these mid sixties Dodge trucks, nice styling.
