The UPS truck that flipped contained 16,000 pounds of industrial printer ink, which now covers Route 128 in Boston, MA. The roadway has since been repaved, though it was shut down for five hours on March 9, 2011.

To me, the funniest thing about that picture is, it is my understanding this is precisely where the color brown came from.
The story I heard was, when the company was first created, they weren't sure about a color but the owner got a great deal on a garage filled with paint of all different colors. When you mix together hundreds of colors of car-paint, you get brown.

Hive mind, I need your help. We're looking for a car for my wife. She's learning stick, but isn't comfortable with it yet, and transports therapy patients for work, so automatic is pretty much a must. No full-size sedans, no trucks, no Germans – too picky about specific maintenance. We found an Acura CL that had everything we wanted, for a good price, but after a "discussion" with her mother today, a 4-door is now a requirement. Don't get me started on that.

Must be new enough to have child safety locks, and reliable enough not to leave her on the side of the road. We have AAA, but we'd prefer to avoid the hassle. Must be able to achieve 20 hwy mpg (higher the better). Hatches and wagons are a plus. Prefer to avoid Hyundai/Kia unless 2005 or newer, which is a stretch in our price range. We'd prefer to spend around $4-5k, but could go up to $6500-7k for a great car. I can handle oil changes and little fixes, but my job is likely to be traveling soon, and the apartment frowns on car maintenance anyway. Less than 150k miles and recent service records would be nice.

What vehicles am I overlooking? The Boise market, like so many out there, seems to be on crack, so people are asking stupid money for their 200k mile, salvage-title Accords and CRVs. Can you give me any suggestions of cars that aren't soul-crushingly dull to drive, but still reliable and safe? If the price was right, I'd be willing to fly out and drive it back, as long as it's within a 16-hour-day's drive of home.

    Our list:
Sedans: Civic, Accord, Camry, Corolla, Legacy, Impreza, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Protege, Mazda 3/6. Basically any Japanese sedan with a good record, or their upmarket equivalents.
    AWD Cute-utes: CRV, RAV4, possibly Escape/Mariner/Tribute
Jeep XJ, ZJ, and WJ (4.0 only)

Sorry, I know it's a boring list if a GTO isn't one of the choices, but such is the life of a young hoon and his wife, trying to stick to a budget. If you know of a specific vehicle for sale that is mechanically sound and cosmetically presentable, you can post a reply here or email me at tyler dot brand at gmail dot com. I'm so tired of this search – it feels like someone just keeps moving the carrot a little farther out of reach every time I think we have a car nailed down. Help me out, guys!

thats a tall order my friend but since you are looking at 150,00 miles plus it opens the scale pretty wide:

Im sure other will chime in on ideas..Personally i say find a good Honda like a Civic sedan: they are easy to work on, easy to maintain and the powertrain is tough as nails. My brother has a 95 Civic that wont die.. it only has 70grand on the odo but even with a blown O2 sensor and after a palm tree fell on the hood during a hurricane , the little bugger still scoots…. another option based solely on the fact that they sold a million of them is the PT Crusier: Is it fun to drive? no.. but salvage yards are littered with extra parts and such for the cheap. The resale value is pretty low for a practical car.

I still say a good low 100 grand mile Civic is a good investment

Ive had 3 Nissans so far: Sentra, Altima and the Maxima and with the last car (even though it is a hoot to drive and the Bose stereo is awesome) has sworn me off Nissan for a while (unless someone hands me a GT-R)
Every Nissan Ive had has some sort of reliability problem even though I am meticulous about maintenance

      • MrHowser says:

A newer Civic or CRV would be highest on the list, as she's already comfortable with those. The Boise market is just littered with overpriced junk. We're borrowing the in-laws PT, and while I can't deny its practicality, I hope we don't end up going that route. With 30,000 miles on it, it drives worse than my wife's 230k mile Civic drove.

I'm going to risk it all and say, "GMC Astro-Van". My Dad was the Fleet-Manager of several So. AZ Counties during his "retirement", and he was amazed at how little they cost to repair and maintain. I really wanted one when we had our second kid (I wanted to paint it like a little A-Team van), but my wife put the kibosh on that.

      I'd still consider a mini-van, though.

      • MrHowser says:

I'm open to a minivan… not sure if she is, though. Mazda 5's are still too new and costly. I've seen a couple 01/02 MPV's that aren't bad looking, as minivans go.

    • FЯeeMan says:

As nasty as it sounds, a Dodge (Grand) Caravan might just fit the bill. I've owned three.
They're reasonably comfortable on a long drive (seats much better on the newer ones)
They're stupid cheap on maintenance – even if you don't do it.
They get about 20-22MPG (3.8 l engine, flat mid-west driving)
Plenty of room for hauling people & their accessories. (lots of 1000+ mile road trips w/6 people)

My '01 was totalled at 180k miles when someone stopped in front of me.
My '02 is trooping on at about 185k miles
My '99 was totalled at 220k miles when someone sideswiped me. We've continued to drive it as a utility vehicle and it's at 280k now.

It's a +10,000 Appliance of Soul Sucking on the hoon scale, but they are reasonably nimble performers considering they're 3-row, 7-seat people movers with luggage space.

      • MrHowser says:

Growing up, we had a '95 non-Grand, and we got a lot of good years of service out of it. For all I know, it's still chugging along somewhere.

    • FuzzyPlushroom says:

You did say hatch was a plus – that means I'm going to suggest the earlier Matrix/Vibe if you can find one with highway miles, the Focus (after the first two or three years), and remind you of the Protege5 and – dare I say it? – Aerio. Most other recent hatches – Mazda3s, Astras – are probably too new or hold their value too well to be considered.

Actually, a five-door Focus might just be it. Ford had the issues mostly sorted by '02/'03 as far as I can tell. I might suggest the Mazda 626 as well, though the CD4E automatic on the four-cylinders is in my experience, to put it nicely, apocalyptically bad (it's in the Escape too…).

      • pj134 says:

Holy shit I made the incorrect vehicular choice… I could have bought an Astra for 9 grand new in 09…. They're selling for 15k with 30k miles now… What did I do!?!

        /putsheadonkeyboard

      • Devin says:

I'm going to second the Matrix/Vibe twins. My sister and I both have one and they've both been some pretty decent vehicles. And I'd argue mine is pretty fun when pushed, but of course I would, I paid cash money for it.

      • MrHowser says:

Matrix/Vibe and Pro5 are both on my list, but the few we've found are too expensive or stickshift. I like the idea of a 5-door Focus – hadn't been thinking much about those. A wagon would be even better.

        • Devin says:

Focus wagons are cheap like borscht, at least where I live. For some reason they go for at least $1,000 less than the other Focus models.

          • MrHowser says:

And where is that? I've looked so much in Boise, Portland, and Seattle, and I just keep seeing the same cars over and over.

            • Devin says:

Saskatchewan, so wrong country unfortunately. There were several really nice ones for around $5-6000 earlier in the summer.

        • pj134 says:

Maybe a base model V50 from the first year or so? They seem to be pretty low in price and look decent and are basically a last generation Focus wagon with up line bits.

    • muthalovin says:

I think Impreza's and Mazda 3's would be your best bet for non-SUVs.

I did see a 2002 WRX with 200k miles on it for $5300 on Craigslist…

    • MrHowser says:

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I'll keep on the lookout for some of those new ideas.

Yeah, the first time I saw that one it was put shea donkey board. Kind of the running joke behind it.

  18. pj134 says:

I see you found a picture of the last time I ate Mexican food.

  19. coupeZ600 says:

Most Trucks carry at least the minimum of one million dollars of liability insurance, but cargo insurance is completely left to the Carrier. My Truck can carry about 9,000 gallons of gasoline so it only has 50K of cargo insurance (@$5.00/gal) but has 25 million dollars of liability because if shit goes wrong, it goes REAL wrong, and those zero's just start piling on.
