A Post Apocalyptic Delica Micro Van For all Your Post Apocalyptic Narrow Street Delivery Needs

Tim Odell November 3, 2010 Wagon Wednesday

4x4 mitsubishi delica van 1Unfortunately, a zombie apocalypse hasn’t broken out in some poorly paved, fuel-starved, right hand drive corner of the world. This little beastie of a Mistubishi Delica was built in less than a week for a low-budget short film shot in London over the summer. Beyond that, details are sparse. Hit the jump for more pictures.

Visiting the Caribbean years ago, I was astounded at all of the 4×4 micro-vans around. Not so much meant for serious trail running, their 4×4 systems were meant for dealing with the mostly unpaved roads on rainy days (which is almost every road and day on St. Lucia). Why 60 horsepower, barely five passenger super-tippy boxes on wheels were never a big hit in the US is no shocker (although some live on), but in places where small is the new black they make a lot of sense.

More pictures and some background on the build and use of this impish little thing can be found in the UK-based Retrorides forum. It appears the poster is a part of “Area 52“, which is a semi-public garage/workshop thing.

Awesome looking… I don't want to be that guy, but… What about MPG's??

I really need to create my own Zombie Apocalypse Vehicle or (ZAV), but what to make it out of? There are so many capable vehicles out there for which to get your zombie survival on in. My mind wants to think 2nd gen Explorer, plentiful, cheap and still rugged before losing its capabilitys.

I know you've all got an opinion, can you sway my mind to something maybe more unique? or better?

    vancouver is crawling with these.

These vehicles, along with Nissan skylines, and those little tiny cab forward Japanese Kei trucks have become popular here in British Columbia. We see them everywhere it seems, diesel engines purring.

They are imported legally for road use by "Grey Market" dealers who fix the few Ministry of Transport related things, such as standard headlights, approved tires and so forth. The type in this article sells for anywhere from 8 to 14 thousand.

Check out craigslist in the Vancouver BC area and search for "delica" "JDM" or "right hand drive".

Can you, our American friends buy them? Not for road use til they are at least 25 years old. So says your DOT.

That first photo is radical. If I saw this thing rollin' though my hood, I would know that something, somewhere had gone horribly wrong.

Other than the mesh screens, this how Delicas are normally equipped in Australia.
    There are zillions down here.

I think when the zombies DO eventually rise up against us, they will in fact be outnumbered by Delicas.

Photos of it in 'action' can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30395286@N06/sets/72

The vehicle has now been painted NATO green and there is more to do with the vehicle like install a winch and some different suspension which I hope to do this coming year…

  9. Slag says:

I know these are smaller than, like, a Ford E-Series, but you can't really call them 'micro' can you?
