Maximum Showdown Weekend: 1964 Desirability, an Impala 409 SS or an Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Convertible

Jim Brennan October 3, 2010 Showdown

Welcome to another round of the Maximum Weekend Showdown, using the inventory from the St. Louis Car Museum to perform these posts. Desirability; It’s an intangible, and can only be explained that very moment you experience it. You lay eyes on something and it automatically triggers desire. It could be anything, a House, a Car, a Potential Spouse, Jewelry, or just food. So on the premise of desirability, I lay before you two cars that were built by General Motors during the model year of 1964. Which one triggers your desire?

Here is a 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop Coupe, in Riverside Red. Desirable enough, but let’s take it up a notch by adding a 409 CID V-8. How’s that for desirable? How about adding a Muncie 4-speed stick, Bucket Seat Interior, Center Console, and for good measure, the optional Tachometer sitting right in front of the driver. Did that push the desirability button? I bet it did.

According to the listing:

This Wisconsin born, rare and increasingly collectible 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS 409 is an outstanding and drivable example of this well-established classic. This Riverside Red over black interior 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS sport coupe features: Rare and very desirable 409 CID V8 (QA code), aluminum intake with dual 4 BBL Carter carburetor set-up added, center console mounted shifter, bucket seats, Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, 3.70:1 Posi-traction rear end, original style AM pushbutton radio, full factory SS wheel covers with white wall tires, factory column tachometer, and more!

This very tight car boasts a very well kept older restoration and sits in superb cosmetic and mechanical condition and is ready for showing and cruising. With many classics to choose from, it can be a daunting task to select a car that will capture the attention of car show goers, collectors and automotive enthusiasts of all types. Few cars will ever be so universally accepted in all automotive circles as the early 60s Impala SSs, especially a red on black 64 with a 409 V-8 and a 4 speed. Be assured, this car will be in a league of its own wherever it goes!

The asking price for this very desirable Impala SS 409 is set at $39,900! See the entire listing here.

Many find that a car without luxury features not as desirable as one that comes with them, and our next car should suit them well. This is a 1964 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Convertible, finished in white with a ox-blood red interior. 60′s convertible are pretty desirable, but lets start adding features like Factory Air Conditioning, Power Seats, Power Windows, and a Tilt Steering Column, and the desirability level increases. How about Factory Radio Reverberation, and a Power Antenna? Take a look at those wheels, as they are very rare Cast Aluminum rims. Does that crank the desirability meter to 11?

According to the listing:

This is a four documented owner car that came out of California. Condition is remarkable! Loaded with options such as Power Window, Seats, Air conditioning, Power trunk release, Power antenna, reverberation, Rare cast wheels, Tilt wheel and more. New top, recent paint, laser straight body and beautiful interior make this one of the nicest 1964 ’98s around today. It has been well maintained since new and we have a book of receipts and maintanence. Shows 38,000 miles and looks it, but is realistically 138,000. Recent engine and transmission rebuild. Little details like date coded plug wires and four T-3 headlights show the care this car has been given. Comes with original owners manual and full set of factory service manuals. These convertibles are getting hard to find this nice and to get a high option 98 is even harder.

The asking price for this White on Red Oldsmobile is $32,900! See the entire listing here.

Which of these two 1964 Dreamboats would you call Desirable?

Tough choice. I used to have a '64 2dr Impala HT. It wasn't the 409 tho. It had a 327-300hp, hd powerglide, 12 bolt rear end and factory A/C (pretty rare in Illinois back in '64) that worked. 2nd owner, the first being a 65 year old man who just wanted something powerful enough to run the A/C (the guys at the delaer he worked at had a little fun with his order). Very fast car! I also own a '61 Olds 4dr ht.

Had to go with the Olds though. I love Oldsmobiles, plus the Olds is a ragtop.

Imagine the guy who bought the Impala saying to the guy who bought the Ninety-Eight, "Y'know, in 40 years, my Chevy here will be worth more'n your Olds, 'cause Mexicans like to soup 'em up."

That Oldsmobile 98 SUCKS ARSE!! Tonyola, Black Steelies, Maymar & Richard Cockf have no taste in cars.. All of them probably own rust buckets.. but here they are talking smack about one of the nicest impalas ever built. That '64 ss kills that crappy Olds 98. You all better recognize! IMPALAS BEST CARS EVER.. 1958-1965.. ARE THE NICE ONES!!! NOT A FAN 66 & UP.
