Hooniverse Weekend Edition: A Turbocharged 1965 VW Type II Bus
Tamer Omran penned this article over at Motormavens.com under the title of “Car Spotting”, and this little number is really a great looking vintage VW, packing something special under it’s rear. Get your mind out of the gutter, and make the jump to see the rest of this awesome van….
The bus belongs to Rolando Alvarado, and he has always had a soft spot for air cooled Volkswagens, but it wasn’t until 1980 when he finally acquired his first one, a 1969 Bug. According to Tamer:
First, back to the story of how this bus came to be. After the 69’ Bug decided to blow its brains out all over the side of the 405, Rolando stopped tinkering with cars until the year 2000. It was then, while browsing the Samba forums, that he discovered his next big future project – you guessed it, this 1965 Type II VW Bus. However, acquiring this Bus immediately became a master’s class in “easier said than done”. So, a couple of days later, Rolando found himself making the trek out to Tijuana, Mexico with $2,500 in hand. Nothing left to do but trailer the Bus back home to Cali. However, despite the logistical issues involved in trailering the Bus, Rolando considered himself lucky to find this gem. It came complete with all windows and interior already in place. The only thing missing was the engine but Rolando was cooking up something special to handle that small deficiency.

When you look as good as the feature, you want to go slow enough that others can appreciate you.
Sigh. Race Taxi. Someone page tenbeers, it's going to be another solid night on the Tube of You, watching Race Taxi videos.
Oops, this one has more engine:

Cool van, and beautiful photos.
Well put. If I was ever to get into photography professionally, my niche would be veedub vans.
When I first started driving big trucks, a lot of the older ones had the tip-out windshield like this one. You hardly ever used it for ventilation when it was hot because bugs and all sorts of stuff would come in right onto you.
They were real handy when it was raining though, because most of the older trucks had "manual" wipers. You actually had to grab a lever above the wind-shield and move the wiper across by hand. A tip-out windshield let you drive and while not getting you completely soaking wet, allowed you to see between the windshield and the hood and not working your arm off.
Most trucks didn't have the option of a tip-out windshield, so some brilliant mind (a rare thing for a truck-driver) figured out if you cut an onion in half and rubbed it on the windshield it would shed the water and you wouldn't have to work your arm off in the rain.
Rain-X was developed off of this theory, it works way better than an onion, and the guy hauling onions doesn't have anybody to help him tarp or tie-down his load anymore.
