Commenter PapayaSF just tipped us to this T-Bird shooting break for sale in the SF Bay Area. It’s based on the 1961-63 “Rocket Bird” styling, a personal favorite. Sporting a recently rebuilt 390 with (an admittedly generous gross rating of) 300hp, it’s certainly got enough go-power to get out of its own way.
The interior’s in good shape, but sort of hit-and-miss, stylistically. A proper set of “roast your backside” black vinyl seats would be more appropriate than the 90s Explorer looking units in there right now. The wood dash is sweet, though.
It’s for sale at Marin Auto Consignment for $15,995. Not really a bargain, but the awesome per dollar meter is still pegged.

Isn't it shooting brake? Not being pedantic – after reading "shooting break" a few places, I'm unclear which is the proper term.

I don't think I've ever seen a T-bird wagon before (muddled memory here) and I like this one. Sixteen large is a bit steep though.
Eww. I have seen some of the previous writeups on this car and it doesn't get any better with age. That rear hatch has to be from a Pinto Runabout. The seat upholstery is bilious. And it violates my personal rules of wagon conversions, which are (1) Don't Cut Corners, and (2) It Ain't a Real Wagon Unless It's Functional. The Pinto hatch is a cheap and ugly alternative to the extra work involved to blend in a real tailgate. The load floor is ridiculously high. And the rear seat does not look like it folds.
I agree with you that they copped out by using a glass liftgate instead of a tailgate or taligate/glass combo. The glass liftgate does makes it look like a Volvo P1800es, which is never a bad thing.
It's been "brake" until Mercedes wanked it with the 4 door "break"… even then, Mercedes was dodgy on the explanation.

I know this car! It's been hanging around Marin County car shows for years and years now– I think I first saw it when I was a wee hoon of about ten. I've seen it several times in the intervening decade and a half, but I don't think I've ever seen it without some sort of "for sale" sign. It's awesome, but the price tag seems hefty to me.
I work a few blocks away from the place where this car is on consignment– I may have to go and take a closer look.
