Hooniverse Asks- What External Modifications Have You Made to your Car?

Robert Emslie November 20, 2009 Hooniverse Asks

Mud flaps, wheel well lights, spinners and portholes. There’s a wallet-emptying array of crap in the automotive aisle of your local Walmart to make sure no one ever mistakes your car for theirs. Hoons generally like their cars light and lean, without any extraneous accoutrements, but sometimes you just can’t resist that Peeing Calvin sticker.

So, whether it’s a faux baseball through the rear hatch, or double-bladed wipers, have you done anything to your vehicle of choice that would make it less OEM and more OMG? Don’t be shy now, we’re all friends here.

I never modify my car's exterior, I let other people do it for me: no straight doors, missing roof antenna, cracked windshield. Thanks whoever you are!

  2. I am a minimalist, so I never added to the exterior of my cars. Whenever I got a "new"-er car, I would removed pin-striping or any other extra bits from the body to make a nice clean look.

I can't stand body kits or any other after-market wings.

  3. engineerd says:

Nothing. Well, there is a small scratch behind the driver's door and there was a crack in the windshield, but that has been fixed.

I would put a set of rally lights on it, though. That would be kind of cool. Maybe I'll do that.

    • That's a real clean truck. Stock-ish?

      • lilwillie says:

        Thanks

Chassis wise, yes. Original still. I swapped the drum brake for a disc setup. Rear end is stock with 4:11's. 307 SBC fuel injected with a TH350 and a 100 shot of NOS, fuel cell and bottle in the bed. Interior has Aerostar van buckets and the factory dash with a tilt column from a GM.

Back when I built it, 1993, the colors I choose where the popular colors of the day. It is starting to show its age which is cool since having a truck that looks "rough" is the in thing right now.

        • Wow, your truck could almost be a post on it's own.

          • lilwillie says:

Thanks, again. It has a lot of history. It was my High School graduation present. Every kid of course wishes for a vehicle and my Dad got me one. Only thing is it was in a barn, buried under hay and needed a full off resto. No biggie. I love the work. It was my first actual vehicle that I owned, it wasn't shared like my previous two where. Meaning Dad owned them and I borrowed them.

The whole build was less than 4K. Since then maybe another 1K stuck into it here and there. It used to be fast as hell but as I aged and the truck aged I knew it was just "quick". Handles like a 1960 truck also. First year of the torsion bar front setup with independent suspension. Rear end looks eerily similar in suspension design to a Cup car. Funny how that hasn't changed.

I've put about 35,000 miles on it since '93 and the engine is starting to lay down. Life at 4,000rpm's in a 307 isn't all that good for them. :)

It will never be sold, never, no matter what is going on in my life. The Camaro doesn't even hold as much sentimental value as this.

Deer season starts tomorrow and that reminds me I did hit a deer with the truck once. Didn't even dent the truck, but it went under and tore a side pipe off and put me in a slide. Idiot friend riding shotgun screaming "OH SHIT". We had to look for the side pipe in the weeds. Then the dumb ass reaches down and picks it up. Nice set of burns on his hands….

Truck also taught me to never, ever, ever say anything smart ass to a State Trooper, they don't like jokes….at all.

    • engineerd says:

I really like that. Not your everyday flame job. It's more clean.

      • lilwillie says:

Thanks, it was done to hide some screwups. I had a light spot on the driver side hood after painting it. It also help give the truck some character. The solid Teal alone didn't do justice to the front end but I didn't want to repaint the whole truck and didn't want red or orange flames with green.

So in the end it worked.

        • CptSevere says:

Wow, nice truck and coming from a truck guy like me consider it a real compliment. Not too many '60 Chevy trucks still around, and this has got to be one of the nicer ones. Good on you.

    • good choice for the seats! (inflatable lumbar support? did you hook up power to that?)

  4. Alff says:

I've treated the Alfa's front and rear lower valances to healthy treatements of bodywork by curb, giving me one less thing to worry about. t had ancient Enkes on it when I bought it, so that is the most noticeable aftermarket mod but not done by me.

The pickup benefits from an aftermartket 2" ball in the receiver and a 1 7/8" ball in the bumper. While using one of these, the trailer tongue came lose and added some custom bodywork to the tailgate.

  5. Jeep = tinted windows, fab'd up a front bumper with winch, rear with recovery points. Had two kids and haven't made anything else. But those nerf bars are getting a bit rusty, so I think it time to make some new rockers/steps.

vibe = tinted the windows, fixed the door handles.

    • lilwillie says:

I've always wondered on Jeeps why they just don't make the winch and front push bumper standard issue. Then make the non-mudding front end a option.

      • Yeah, the tinfoil bumpers are about the worst idea in the world (Thanks Chrysler.) But it does encourage you to pull that crap off immediately and replace it with something that might protect the vehicle from a shopping cart let alone rocks and trees.

        • I've said before that my Volvo is more Jeeplike than some Jeeps sold today – the Compass, most certainly, the skidplateless models of the Patriot, and (in some ways) the Liberty and Grand.

Have I got a solid rear axle? Yes, I have. Has it got a Dana 30 in the middle? Yes, it has. Do I have amazingly sturdy bumpers? Indeed I do. (I ran into a concrete bollard outside of Dunkin's at 5 mph – intentionally. The bumper cover was unmarked, though the trim over it came loose. Also, yes, I have been cart bowling.) How about excellent visibility? Yup, got that too. Fair ground clearance? You got it.

  6. my first escort (that i'm back to driving since the stupid thing won't die) i added four fog lights to. Two rectangular ones were next to the license plate and 2 round decent sized ones (but still in the 20-30 dollar range) were on top of the bumper. That helped give it the name the "Rally Ricer". Those lights did very little. The first 10 feet in front of the car is better lit up but that's all. And the headlights on this escort have been yellowed to the max(a few months after i got the car i finally reallized there was a chunk of metal in the light) so it's not like they're overpowered. So if anyone is looking to add lights to their car *cough*engineerd*cough* don't even think about getting the cheep lights

  7. Thrashy says:

I put a couple of SCCA decals on the quarter windows and the car is lowered a couple of inches, but other than that it looks a lot like any other Honda that's been accumulating door dings and rust spots for the last twenty years.

  8. joshuman says:

My old Mk II Jetta coupe, possibly now turbocharged and prowling PA, had a bunch of external mods. Most of them were related to lighting. I changed the headlights to a customized quad round setup, added a rear fog light, and added side marker lights. I also added a FUBA rooftop antenna. The one I'm embarrassed about is the a front air dam. It never fit well and eventually got banged up and looked like crap so I took it off.

That quad round setup was a scorcher. I had 400 Watts on high beam which comes in handy when you are trying to dodge deer in the middle of the night in Eastern Washington at 90 MPH.

  9. ptschett says:

The T-bird has a custom hood (courtesy of a deer), a custom rear bumper cover (courtesy of me being an idiot), custom rocker panel paint (or more accurately a lack thereof), cracked windshield (thanks to several stones, a duck, and a hen ringneck pheasant) and a South Dakota State University sticker beside the 3rd brake light.

The Dakota has a few add-ons more for function than appearance: a bedliner, a roll-up tonneau cover and some funky rear mudflaps: mopar-accessories.com

  10. drachemann says:

Along with about 20 dents and a ton of rust, my Festiva has this:

  11. acarr260 says:

My daily driver truck (2000 Silverado 2500 4×4) has these mods: tinted windows, vent visors, nerf bars, fiberglass tonneau cover, in-dash MP3-enabled CD player, and my weimaraner in the backseat.

My camping truck (1987 Chevy Custom Deluxe) has these mods: K&N filter kit, 4" Skyjacker suspension lift, 15" Cragar wheels, 33×12.5×15 A/T tires, off-road (scratch-proof) spray around the lower edge of the body, a dual shock system under the front end, a horrible tape deck, and my weimaraner in the passenger seat.

All of those mods were done before I purchased these trucks (other than the weimaraner… I bought her as a puppy).

  12. I'm fairly certain that picture in the article could get us all banned by Jezebel.

And the Hooters/Trucknutz pic is even worse.

  13. I added a small Miskatonic University parking pass the Goat's windshield. It makes me happy.

  14. PowerTryp says:

None yet, but I have been thinking of turning my taurus into an open wheel car…

  15. Randy went through a phase for a few years where he had a cactus cowboy over the fixed mast antenna on the Kia…

His family got such a kick out of it, we felt obligated to buy more as gifts (we got the original while passing through Jerome, AZ, on our way home from visiting my family).

  16. faster,Tobias! says:

Vinyl mostly; I bought my MINI used and it had a white roof, which I hated, so I had a decal shop make it red. Switched the white mirror caps and chrome grill to red also. Added red vinyl to the front quarter panels and an English-style front plate that reads ‘R3V0 3V0M’.

  17. Tanshanomi says:

    Truck: fiberglass bed lid.
Town Car: zip. nada. zilch. As stock as stock can be.

  19. Van Sarockin says:

I took the fog lights off my car. I got tired of replacing them from driving into wheel stops…

  20. Bumper plugs to fill the holes from the (now removed) front license plate frame. Oh, and the requisite SCCA and PCA stickers. That's it.

  21. F150:
    Lift kit
    Tinted windows
    light weight body modifications (rust)
It's a 95, and i bought it used, with all that on there… it's my "Downriver special" and I love it.

    Mustang:
Black stripes from bumper to bumper.

  22. Joe Dunlap says:

I really enjoy hearing the nice comments about how the clearcoat is peeling like skin from a bad sunburn on my 86 535i. Not worth doing anything else to a vehicle approaching 400K. My wifes Highlander however, was the recent recepient of a really cool 2" ball trailer hitch:-)

  23. CptSevere says:

My '66 F100 didn't have a tailgate when I bought it, so I cut a piece of scrap plywood to fit. I spray painted "Pro Net" on it, and got some laughs about that. Other than that, some dick hit and ran on the left side, the bed is badly dented on that side. Local bodyshop here in town wants a grand to fix that, but there's a guy who has a shop in Naco, literally a hundred feet from Mexico, who will take your vehicle over the border and has a guy there who does great work. He'll get it done for $350.00. Guess who's gonna get that job when I have the money saved up?

  24. engineerd says:

Oh, I also put an In-N-Out sticker in the lower left corner of the back window. I get comments on it all the time from people in the know. Everyone else in Michigan seems oblivious to the awesome that is a Double Double Animal Style.

    • I think I've made mention in the past of the consulting client's customer who relocated to Colorado from San Jose, CA, years ago… Every trip to my client in Los Angeles had to accommodate multiple lunch and/or dinner opportunities at In-N-Out. He converted many of his Colorado co-workers into Double-Double addicts when they would journey out here with him…

    • Everyone made such a big deal about In-N-Out Burger, that when I was in CA, I went there…. the burger was pretty good, but the fries sucked.

      • MrHowser says:

It's funny how that is. I like to think that I'd prefer fresher food, like potatoes cut and cooked right there in front of me. But nope. My taste buds prefer the frozen/fried/heavily salted ones.

    • Maymar says:

When I was in Las Vegas, I stayed in the Luxor, and could see an In-N-Out from my room, because of the giant flashing sign. Of course, it was across the highway, and there was no good way for me to get across on foot (no rental car), so for the several days I was there, it just kept flashing, tantalizingly, teasing me with the burgery goodness I couldn't have.

  25. My first car was a white Triumph Spitfire, and I added a third brake light, (and some tacky gold wheel covers in lieu of actual lattice rims).

Second car was a black AW11 MR2 to which I added a bra (I liked the look at the time)

Fifth car was a dark blue AW11 which got the full rally stripe treatment in silver.

I had a black '98 Triumph Daytona motorcycle that I painted the lower half of the fairing into a phantom Union Jack, using charcoal gray, GM maroon, and Ford Dark Shadow Blue.

Subsequent external mods to any of my vehicles have been removal of the moldings on my XJ-S, and removal of the (previous owner installed) aftermarket side scoops on my Fiero.

Ask this again in a few years when I get the Checker done, and I'll have a laundry list of modifications on that one.

  26. The windshield's busted (I'm getting it fixed next week), the trim doesn't all quite match, and the paint's oxidised so my friends wrote various sexual terms on every horizontal surface, so I need to wax it badly. Oh, and there's a scratch from an incident involving a Road Closed sign.

Uhh, aside from that, I've taken some tread off the tires and scuffed the hubcaps slightly on gravel. I replaced the missing trim and beat-up grille when I bought it, too.

    So it's stock.

  27. Paul Y. says:

My xB has a relatively tasteful body kit, Moon discs, and it came with lowering springs and dark windows. It also came with an intake and fartcan. Yay.

….and on the inside, I changed all the lights to blue LEDs, and covered the headliner in crushed velvet, as well as transferring the stereo from the Impreza I had previously.

Yes, it's pretty ricey, but I don't pretend I can out-accelerate anything other than an old econobox. In fact, I hypermile the shit out of it (which is easy to get away with in a rural area, with long straight stretches of minimally-trafficked roads), and use 20% less fuel than the EPA says I should.

  28. Maymar says:

I've got two stickers on the truck of my car – the Future LeMons Car sticker, and one with the logo of my college's auto show. Other than that, in an effort to slow down the typical Cavalier rear rocker panel rust, I made it worse. I'll just go ahead and claim that it was for lightness.

After being stopped by Local Law enforcement 4 times in a month, I removed the rear wing from my 05 Evo. That was in may & i've not been stopped since. As a bonus, i get about 2 MPG better as well
