I should send this to a buddy of mine who wants to buy a Hummer. He wants an H3 for the "winter traction". You don't buy an H3 for "winter traction", you buy it as a status symbol to prove how adequate you are (at least in your own mind). I'll save this for the day he does buy it, then send it to him. It should make him feel downright inadequate in a fake offroader.
I'm still convinced that there are more H2 Hummers have been made into limos than there are ones that have been taken off road.

H3's actually quite capable, as far as new 4×4s go. 4:1 transfer case with lockers front and rear.
It's not (entirely) the vehicles' fault for attracting poseur douchebags…or those who feel they need "winter traction".
You may want to explain to him that a Subaru would be a better bet. The Part-time locked 4×4 system in a real 4×4 is more prone to sliding in the snow than a more managed AWD system. (At least in the hands of the unknowing).
I tried telling him that he must be doing something wrong if he was having problems in his current FWD car. FWD, at least in my experience, is pretty decent in the snow. I will tell him he should be looking at an AWD system rather than 4WD, but I think that the "winter traction" issue is just a canard and he really does want an H3 for status.
I always had good results in rear wheel drive cars with at least competent snow tires and plenty of weight in the trunk. I used to hate the way FWD cars understeered in the snow. As far as status is concerned, any Hummer confers "dickhead" status, but your buddy doesn't understand that.
You should suggest that he get a late model Cherokee without telling him that they have much better visibility, are very hard to kill, run forever, incredibly cheap to run and repair and are good in snow even with 32×11.5's on em. If he says something along the lines of "Hell no those things are terrible" then you know he's in it just for the status.
My wifes Impreza gets through the snow as well if not better than my 4×4 F150. Mind you my 33" tires float if the snow is deep enough.
Yeah you probably can blame GM for some shortcomings…
A guy I knew a few years back was into this kind of stuff. They actually took normal hills, piled dirt on to make 'em steeper, then covered them in pea gravel to remove all traces of traction.
He had a blast, a really good roll cage, and a huge scar on his arm from where it flew out the window as he rolled down the hill that one time.
I think that guy really does have Jesus as a copilot.
